This is about as deep as I'm willing to go on the discourse of these events

Yall think this gonna have a long term affect on Will's career? I could make a case for either way.
People have different sensitivity levels so I can't speak on anyone else's behalf, but women are REALLY sensitive about hair loss since their lives tend to lean more on presentation and keeping up beauty standards versus men. So I figure that most women going though hair loss would have been bothered by that joke. Not saying that it's rational or irrational, but if my lady felt publicly embarrassed, I would just react. Call me illogical or whatever, but I couldn't just sit there after looking over and seeing her hurt.My wife is strong enough to not make a fool of herself in front of 20 million people. And she certainly wouldn’t want me to do so at a publically aired event and or at a wedding or something.
I didn't do this though. It is a weird strawman you have used to prolong this exchange"Are you really here trying to act like the Oscars is some showcase of edgy comedy"
I'm pushing back from what you said when you refer to the joke as "edgy comedy". It's a very milktoast, innocuous one-liner that doesn't even pass for edgy at the Oscars.
Will Smith totally should come to the award show, he should also know that they're going to be jokes at the expense of celebrities. Once again, Will has attended the Oscars where Chris Rock has made far more offensive jokes than this and he just sat there and laughed. To act surprised and get offended when you are the butt of a joke is straight childish.
Most Oscars humor is PG rated and kinda cringe. The Oscars isn't the damn Apollo.
Ok, he acted childishly. I agree
Just the suggestion it is on Will not to come to the Oscars and sacrifice the biggest night of his career beforehand just seems weird to me
It an award show, he was there to get an award.
A GI Jane joke is PG LOL @ a bald head/GI Jane joke being "the damn Apollo"

I'm just rubbed the wrong way by the expectation that Will was somehow obligated to do what he did because of gender roles. Jada was never a damsel in distress, and I believe she's strong enough as a person to handle this on her own.
There also has to be something that exists in the grey area between doing nothing and assaulting someone over some words.
He recovered from this...Yall think this gonna have a long term affect on Will's career? I could make a case for either way.
Violence has always been good if a woman is the cause rather than the recipientCan we have a clear book on gender roles because as of right now I’m genuinely confused
He recovered from this...
This situation is light work in comparison
"You don't wanna see my hand where your lip be at"
Just to be clear, I fully agree Will's reaction was wrong.Assuming last night was legit & not staged there is just no way to justify what Will did. He's simply an unwell man these days. FWIW, I do think it was real.
How you gonna give an acceptance speech on some "vessel of love" nonsense 25 minutes after you slapped a grown *** man on live t.v.?
Unfortunately, I foresee fallout from this. Totally agree with Hal Sparks that Will Smith just made it seem okay for patrons to hit comedians when they get offended. I guess comedians can't do any crowd work anymore for fear of being slapped in the face for making jokes.
Sometimes you need to smack a *****
Personally, I dont think it was the G.I. Jane joke. At least not as a whole. Will was ready to laugh through that one. It was when Rock objects (presumably to Jada's stank eye) and quips "oh that was a nice one". We ALL know what hes implying there. I think that's when he hit Will's breaking point.in a vaccuum it's a throwaway one-liner, but considering the circumstances of Jada's health...I understand the anger.

A big part of being human is owning up to your mistakes and apologizing to the people you've wronged. He failed to do that.Just to be clear, I fully agree Will's reaction was wrong.
To me, it's obvious homie is going through it and last night was unable to keep up the charade as he has for the last 30 years. He goes on stage to admit as much in his speech. He cracked.
Honestly, I thought his speech was perfect for the moment. He admits he has a purpose and that he is failing/has failed in that moment or perhaps multiple moments to carry it out the right way. I dont think that one emotional outburst changes his purpose. Hes human.
Feels like a lot of the discussion I've read (not really referring to NT) hasnt really given him the chance to be human. He cant fail and still talk about how God is trying to use him. That's the worst part to me. Like anyone is perfect.

The stance, plant, form and follow-through was just so perfect and professional it's like Will just finished slap training camp.
Yeah, I noted previously (different thread) that I wish Will would have mentioned Rock in that apology. He apologized to some, but not all. And I think its cause he's still emotionally hurt by all the stuff that has come about in the last 2 years or perhaps even longer. Overall, I was just attempting to agree that Will is not well.A big part of being human is owning up to your mistakes and apologizing to the people you've wronged. He failed to do that.
Also I can't stand when people introduce the word "perfect" into conversations when someone made a mistake. No one made that the expectation, and creating that artificial yardstick only serves to muddy things up and excuse bad behavior. Perfection isn't achievable, but an apology is certainly within the realm of feasibility.
I get you been pushing this narrative for a while but I’m not buying this narrative that he isn’t touching white ppl at the Oscars. Will been crying for them folks acceptance for the last decade. He ain't touching no white folks at the Oscars. At other venues? Sure. But not at the Oscars. Hope this brother gets some therapy though it's obvious now that something has been building up in dude for a long time.
