there's a diversity of opinions in this thread,
im talking specifically about people justifying wills action based on how offensive the joke was.
Oh, I was asking because it seem like you were implying there was some sort of consensus with this line...

Im so tired of the joke dissection discourse.

people have a right to feel however they want to feel about a joke,

but it feels the rules are now;
once you take offence you are totally entitled to act like buffoon.

1. What are you talking about white writers? The joke wasn't written by anyone. It's just crowd work that every comedian does. Believe it or not, many comedians make up jokes on the spot based on the audience.
The joke was written by one of the Oscar's writers. 90% chance is a white man.
2. If I took my wife or mother to a comedy show (which is effectively what the Oscars are) and the comedian made a joke at their expense, I wouldn't get butt hurt and act like a child about it. If you don't want to get made fun of, don't go to a comedy show! Stay at the house!
It was an award show to recognize achievements not a comedy show what you talking about lol...
He put him on notice before to keep Jada name out his mouth and he kept pushing it. Pure disrespect.
I see how you feel about your wife though
Honestly, I didn't even watch the show... Did Seth/Chaz/Chip have something in the chamber for Will or just the Black woman?
I genuinely wonder if any of you guys have ever been to a comedy show. I've been fortunate enough to see Dave Chappelle when he was in Atlanta, Aries Spears and JB Smoove and many other prominent black comedians in person over the years. Roasting audience members is part of the show.
I've been to plenty comedy shows. Idk why you keep saying comedy show... This was an awards ceremony

-I said most Oscars humor.

-So really, I have no idea what you are even trying to say.

Rock's joke crossed the line to some because of Jada's medical condition

I don't see a lot of people saying "Rock crossed the line by making fun of black women that chose to cut their long hair to rock a bald head"

It seems that is how people are rationalizing Jada's and Will's anger.

-Are you really here trying to act like the Oscars is some showcase of edgy comedy? You can't possibly trying to do that, are you?

Once again, GI Jane/bald head is no where approaching edgy. It's an innocuous, PG rated joke. Do you genuinely think that one liner was offensive?

Maybe we just have a different perspective on this. That's a PG joke in my eyes. Maybe it's "edgy" to you (and Will apparently).

I just mean for the people who are going with the joke justified a physical response line of reasoning.

tbh i don't think there's a real consensus on this whole thing.
seems like there are multiple factions

My wife would slap me like Will did Chris if I ever got up in a big event and in front of everyone slapped someone and then proceeded to shout f bombs at the top of my lungs because someone said something to insult my wife. Think: a big event like say a wedding or graduation ceremony.

Chris Rock is in Boston touring all week and already sold more tickets in 12 hours than he did the past month

When do the shows start? If he cracks a Jada/Will joke, I'll know last night was real.

I'm just rubbed the wrong way by the expectation that Will was somehow obligated to do what he did because of gender roles. Jada was never a damsel in distress, and I believe she's strong enough as a person to handle this on her own.

There also has to be something that exists in the grey area between doing nothing and assaulting someone over some words.

is that the Chris Rock and Kevin Hart tour?
Chris can parlay this to a big special if he wanted to :lol

Have you guys ever watched a Comedy Central Roast? They’ve said MUCH worse on TV…..

A roast is there to be offensive though  this is an awards show with a bunch of rich celebrities drinking champagne or something.

Edit: time and place, time and place

Btw.... I hope yall havent forgot.

These are Hollywood ACTORS!!!!!!

THIS. Dudes in here saying it's either joining Chris and laughing at his own wife or assault. Stoneface/eyeroll/head shake would've been a perfect reaction.

People need to be touched 👏🏾

Bring back the source awards

It’s funny seeing the crowd that always talks about how “back in the day” was better/realer and How human interactions & consequences to disrespect are not happening anymore because of the internet/social media……now applauding Chris Rock for not reacting in a way that is pure respectability politics..while demonizing Will Smith for doing what they claim would be appropriate. It’s wild.

Will felt played, and reacted accordingly. He was wrong, but I get it. Chris Rock went out sad. But whatever, that’s kinda him at this point. Letting a dude slap you in your face, is “a slap in the face”

That phrase means something for a reason.

Months ago it was “jada disrespecting will” “will the laughing stock” now that basically greased a n_ in the public domain, it’s a problem.

People so wishy washy. He gave the spectators what they wanted. Now, they don’t want it :lol :lol fickle

-Once again? Famb I have no idea what you are even trying to argue now. A second ago you said Will should have been prepared for the jokes, and suggesting if he had a problem he should have stayed his *** at home

-If Rock didn't know about her condition, not really. Even though I would not have made a joke about a black woman's hair in public myself

If he did know, yeah, it is offensive. That adds another dynamic to it.

- I think it is completely fair for Jada and Will to take offense to it. Even though I wished Will would have checked Rock differently if he was upset
