The Oscars: 2024's 96th Academy Awards, 7:00pm March 10th ABC

Chris Rock allowed a White comedy writer to make fun of her condition.
On top of the of the fact it's been claimed that Will had to tell Rock to chill out before.
If I was Will and he said that bout my wife I'd do the same thing bro.

Would you be joining in and laughing at your moms/wife is getting roasted about something she's likely humiliated about?

1. What are you talking about white writers? The joke wasn't written by anyone. It's just crowd work that every comedian does. Believe it or not, many comedians make up jokes on the spot based on the audience.

2. If I took my wife or mother to a comedy show (which is effectively what the Oscars are) and the comedian made a joke at their expense, I wouldn't get butt hurt and act like a child about it. If you don't want to get made fun of, don't go to a comedy show! Stay at the house!

I genuinely wonder if any of you guys have ever been to a comedy show. I've been fortunate enough to see Dave Chappelle when he was in Atlanta, Aries Spears and JB Smoove and many other prominent black comedians in person over the years. Roasting audience members is part of the show.

It's not a barber shop, barbecue or you're 9:00 to 5:00 office job. You're at a comedy show! A comedy show that Will Smith has been at more than two dozen times and he's seen presenters and hosts roast audience members. If you don't like jokes, please stay at the house.
The Oscars is a comedy show?

I mean there are jokes, comedians do host, but to me it seems like it is fundamentally not really about giving out awardss not comedic performances

 @ dudes trying to make this a black and white thing like Will wouldn’t smack fire out of Ricky Gervais.

If it’s really about to be more jokes on him like y’all think you’ll definitely get to see Will attack a white comic over this.
Will been crying for them folks acceptance for the last decade. He ain't touching no white folks at the Oscars. At other venues? Sure. But not at the Oscars. Hope this brother gets some therapy though it's obvious now that something has been building up in dude for a long time.

two grown *** men fist fighting on stage at the oscars in front of million of people is a nasty look.

Chris Rock prevented that outcome by not retaliating.
I agree.

Chris Rock bit his tongue too.

Will could have handled this in a lot of ways. He could've even met him backstage if he really wanted to put hands on CR.

I can't tell whether CR knew of Jada's condition, but I would be surprised if he didn't, considering that they all know (or know people who know) since they are all big names in the same industry.
fear of being slapped in the face for making jokes.
In America, that's not the worst they should be afraid of...

It was a poor joke, but hardly offensive if Chris really wasn’t aware of what condition she is going through according to tmz’s source. If anyone hires Ricky Gervais for the next award show, he’s going to start hiring body guard when he host one of the shows.

Comedy is part of the show. Do you ever notice that the Oscars are almost always hosted by comedians (or actors trying to tell jokes) who go on lengthy monologues to open the show? Are you new to watching award shows?
Comedy is part of the show, but it is fundamentally an awards show. Hell the Oscars is a fashion show too to some degree

If no jokes were told and they gave out the awards, it would still be the Oscars. If no awards were given out and we only heard jokes, it would be unlike any Oscars.

Will was there because he got nominated for an award he was likely to win.

The main purpose of an award show is to give out.....check notes.....awards

I think it is kinda silly to tell a professional not to come to an award show involving their profession because it contains offensive jokes.

It’s not a comedy show, it’s an award ceremony. Regina Halls thing with the single guys was pretty cringeworthy too. These people trying too hard.

They can discuss subjects that may offend someone but looking someone dead in the eye and saying some disrespectful **** about a person's appearance or condition is weak ****. You do that at a BBQ, you're getting slapped. But it's OK if you have a mic? Thats dumb.

Imagine if Chris made a joke about asking an obese woman when Precious 2 (best example I could think of lol) was coming out? Yikes.

I think he woulda did the same thing.
You think he's making that long walk towards The Rock knowing he's slapping him when he gets there and then turning around without fear to walk back to his seat?

Cmon man he picked an easy target to take out his frustrations on. At no point was he worried about Chris doing ****.

Will Smith totally should come to the award show, he should also know that they're going to be jokes at the expense of celebrities. Once again, Will has attended the Oscars where Chris Rock has made far more offensive jokes than this and he just sat there and laughed. To act surprised and get offended when you are the butt of a joke is straight childish.

- Oscars been traaaaash. A shot in the arm gets everyone interested. #scripted
- Actors... acting? #scripted
- Will wins for depicting a black man fiercely protective of his family... and then at the Oscars he proceeded to depict a black man fiercely protective of his family. Imagine someone playing a wizard then interrupting the Oscars in a full robe & wizard hat. Same thing. #scripted
- We been hearing all this 'Will ain't no bad boy like Pac, and she wanted Pac.' Real easy to create this scenario where Will plays the bad boy and swoons Jada. #scripted
- GI Jane joke didn't even hit THAT hard, then Chris is like "What? That was a good one." #scripted
- No security or nothing? Supposedly this man just walked on stage on his own, smacked Chris on his own, and... no security? I've heard people say "If Will had smacked a white actor he would have been tackled expeditiously." I completely agree, if it were unscripted. The problem here isn't that Chris is black; it's that it was #scripted.
- Will walked aaaaaaallll the way from his seat to Chris, after just laying down a joke about Jada, and Chris just cool af. Stands there hands behind his back, and even had his chin out a little. 🤣 #scripted

Re: #2. Even if you were butt hurt, you wouldn’t go up to the guy mid show with 20 million around the world watching and slap a guy.

Most Oscars humor is PG rated and kinda cringe. The Oscars isn't the damn Apollo.

Ok, he acted childishly. I agree

Just the suggestion it is on Will not to come to the Oscars and sacrifice the biggest night of his career beforehand just seems weird to me

It an award show, he was there to get an award.

Im so tired of the joke dissection discourse.

people have a right to feel however they want to feel about a joke,

but it feels the rules are now;
once you take offence you are totally entitled to act like buffoon.
Are you actually reading what people are saying, or are you just upset at what you think they are saying?

the english language is malleable enough that any joke, with even a slightest bit of edge
can be interpreted by someone somewhere as offensive.

if this is justification for Will's buffoonery
well every comedian better wear headgear.

Ricky Gervais golden globe bits, were far edgier and closer to the line.

by this logic Golden Globes should have turned into the Royal Rumble.

A GI Jane joke is PG 🤣 LOL @ a bald head/GI Jane joke being "the damn Apollo"

A GI Jane joke is PG 🤣.
-I said most Oscars humor.

-So really, I have no idea what you are even trying to say.

Rock's joke crossed the line to some because of Jada's medical condition

I don't see a lot of people saying "Rock crossed the line by making fun of black women that chose to cut their long hair to rock a bald head"

It seems that is how people are rationalizing Jada's and Will's anger.

-Are you really here trying to act like the Oscars is some showcase of edgy comedy? You can't possibly trying to do that, are you?
