The Official NFL Off-Season Thread - Tony Gonzalez traded to the Falcons

Happy with what Pitt has done and resigning Heath may be next. I will miss Byron and hope he starts

MJD deserves that payday. Now Jax need to invest whatever they have left in the o-line so he don't get killed out there.

How does MJD deserve to be the 3rd highest paid RB?

I aint mad he got it but "deserves" is something entirely different.
Report: Gonzalez Traded To Falcons
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 23, 2009, 2:30 p.m. EDT

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons inexchange for a 2010 second-round draft pick, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

This marks the first trade between former New England Patriots colleagues Scott Pioli, the Chiefs'General Manager, and Thomas Dimitroff, the Falcons' General Manager.

Ironically, the 10-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time All-Pro rejected a trade to Atlanta last year.

Now, though, the Falcons have an established young quarterback in Matt Ryan.

Gonzalez caught 96 passes last season for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns.

In a dozen NFL seasons, Gonzalez has caught 916 career passes for 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns.

UPDATE: The Chiefs have officially confirmed the deal and released statements from Chiefs team owner Clark Hunt and Pioli.

"On behalf of my family and the Chiefs, I want to thank Tony for his time in Kansas City," Hunt said. "Over the last 12 seasons, Tony hasbeen one of the finest players in Chiefs history, and he will always be remembered as a member of the Chiefs.

"His play on the field speaks for itself - he holds almost every major NFL record for tight ends, and he is arguably the best to ever play hisposition. We wish him the best in Atlanta."

Added Pioli: "From an organizational as well as personal standpoint, there are mixed emotions. I have the highest personal and professional respectfor Tony and consider him to be a future Pro Football Hall of Famer."

Heard on the radio that The Arizona Cardinals have lowered their demands on Boldin, they only want a 2nd round pick and are in talks with the NY Giants,Philly, and Titans (one other AFC team).

While Braylon would fit the Giants more with his size, Boldin to me is more of a gamer and would fit in well with any of those 3 teams.

Do work New York.

Lo Neal blockin for McFadden huh?

I don't care if he's old, dude gets huge numbers for his backs, hope they both stay healthy.

Roy and Tank both in Cincy? I wonder if it'll actually be more relaxed there then in big D.

Yeaaaaa Bengals. Tank, Roy, Leonard hopefully playoffs at least
Fianlly we going out and grabbing free agents that mean something the only time we do FA work is to pick up leftover RB's. Their really high on Ced thoughso we'll see lookin 7-9 right now in a tough tough divison.

Explanation?

That's the weird thing... he was only due $3 million. All the coach had to say was:

"This was a difficult decision based on a lot of factors," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said Friday in a news release. "I have a great deal ofrespect for Pisa and wish him all of the best."

What factors?

Yeah we making some power moves. They worked out Rod Hood yesterday so that could be another pick up.

Roy had his best years under Zimmer in Dallas. Hopefully, we can see something similar in Cincy. Not like he's old he's only 28. As a Bengals fanyou've got to like what we've done this off-season. Hearing that we are in the mix for Edge? Doesn't really make sense since though IMO. Rod Hoodcould be a nice nickleback for us.

Cosign.

But I think Edge would be great here. I think it would give him the breath of fresh air He needs. We have great loyal fans and He would be great out of theback field like when He was with Indy. Rod could possibly move into the starting line up. JJoe and Leon get smoked sometimes man lol. I know they are young butwhen it rains it pours sometimes

.

But yeah I think our D finally has an attitude. I think they are going to be fast and physical and knock some people out.

Maybe I'm too pumped but we aint made moves like this since Marvin got here.I think we need another solid linebacker though. I'm sold but then again I'm not sold on the young core.

Dhani is solid and he'll probably start for one last year. Draft another linebacker next year and slide Rey back into his natural position. I reallydon't even want him to be on the weakside this year. Much rather see him at MLB. He's a playmaker so as long as he's on the field somewhereit's fine I guess.

Yeah. Dhani may have two years because nobody right now can out right replace him and next year even with Rey and Keith, a void is there becausenobody has truly stepped up and made themselves known. But who knows. Maybe we'll trade Chad or something and get something great in return.

No don't trade Chad lol, personally i'd be VERY disappointed lol but that's just me. Chad wants to win, all his yappin and complaining will stopwhen the team starts winning again. We've had good pickups at linebacker but unfortunate events like last year rivers going out early and Pollack'scareer being very short lived sadly to name a couple have made it bad for us, Rivers is intrumental to this D and will be for years and years to come though.TThe pickup in Hood boost this defense and I completely agree we need aggression out this D, but I'm a let them progress because yes they are young andwill only improve. The one letdown I have so far tho is the drafting of Andre Smith.....don't like him after all the pregress he's made, I want him toprove me and everybody else wrong. We're 1 or 2 leaders away from playoff contention once again, maybe Rey will be one of them.

That's bad news for Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, the team's topdraft pick who will need a strong running game if he starts from Day 1.

Washington, the Jets' dynamic running back/kick returner, skipped the first day of the Jets' organized team activities Monday amid reports he'sunhappy with his current contract, which has a base salary of $535,000.

Jones, 30, the team's No. 1 running back, has been a no-show for all of the team's workouts this offseason. Jones is scheduled to make $900,000 in2009, the third season of a four-year, $20 million contract he agreed to when he was acquired from the Bears in 2007. He made $13.1 million in the first twoseasons of his contract.

Washington, 26, is entering the final season of his initial rookie contract. He reportedly is seeking a new contractthat averages $6 million per season. The Jets have been negotiating a new contract with Washington this offseason, but according to the Star-Ledger of Newark,N.J., those talks hit a snag. A source told the newspaper that the team's initial offer to Washington was "insulting."
Washington led the NFL with 2,337 all-purpose yards in 2008 and scored nine touchdowns. Jones also enjoyed a standout 2008 season, rushing for 1,312 yardsand 13 touchdowns. The Jets also drafted another running back, Shonn Greene, withthe first pick of the third round -- trading three draft picks to move up 11 spots to select him.

All of the Jets' workouts so far have been voluntary. Their first mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 9-11.

I love Leon & all, but homie wants a 6 mil a year salary.

Hes a 3rd down back & a return specialist, ain't no way he's seeing that type of bread.
