The Official NBA Season Thread: SFA Prevails

Would having the high ground matter against Vic?

No sport minus the NFL is ratings proof. The narratives on the 3 point shooting, season not mattering and no defense being played all work with casual fans. Throw in that there was no real hype around the season starting last week. ESPN and TNT stink at pushing the product. Pretty much all that needs to be said.

At the end of the day people watch for entertainment. And a lot of these new players aren't entertaining. Are they statically dominate? Sure. But the casual fan doesn't care for nuance skill.

And we need more high flyers. Ive said it before this current top 10 players in the league has probably the lowest average vertical of any top 10 since like the 1970s. Joker, luka, shai, Giannis, embiid is not gonna cut it. From a money standpoint.

Also this. The old guard being so good that they’ve stretched out their basketball relevancy while still not really contending takes up a bunch of space because they’re still the most famous guys

The NBA has to do a better job at hooking people in opening night/week. Why are we watching Lakers vs Minnesota on opening night?

Several matches to bring people in that would've worked:

1. Golden State vs Dallas
2. Knicks vs Minny
3. Boston vs Mavs
4. Clippers vs 76ers (if they were healthy)

Can't cannibalize your schedule for just one night. Gotta sprinkle key games throughout the season.

New storylines have to be written. There's only so much left that guys like Steph, KD, and Bron can generate. At least they got the tv deals in place already.

Teams will meet more than once though. If I’m not a basketball fan, watching the Celts vs Knicks and Minny vs Lakers doesn’t interest me. You have to sell a storyline.

Even if they didn’t want to do those games, play teams who has players people want to see. People want to see Ja, Zion, Wemby, etc. Those games were just random.

That’s a player problem. There’s like 2 interesting young American stars for casuals (Ja, Ant) and one can’t stop waiving guns. The League being so player driven and not team driven makes it tough when you run into that.

This

The NBA not having one of its two biggest stars (Steph) on opening WEEK was a glaring mistake. Really had the warriors playing on nba tv.

Plus Embiid, Paul George & Philly shenanigans. And some boring Eastern conference teams.

I get them promoting new stars with Ant etc…but it would’ve made more sense for opening night to be Dallas vs minny. Run back golden state vs La. And have PHX play like Boston or Denver or something.

Problem solved

Celtics/Knicks was the most watched early-window game on opening night in 7 years. Big market teams that are supposed to be good.

Folks aren’t just tuning in to watch Ja and Ant. Is what it is.

Bron and the Lakers look like they are more interested in the costume/halloween party that is going to take place at his Akron house before they head to Toronto.
