I saw a couple years ago from a pew survey that 1 in 11 Americans logs into twitter monthly. Impossible to tell now since Musk took a giant dump on it, let bots reign and cut off almost all purview into the company’s metrics. But general consensus is the site’s user base has declined rather dramatically in the past two years.

Bottom line is that it’s a small minority of Americans who regularly look at it. But you get these obsessive niches on it full of the dumbest people and those are generally the trends and views the media runs with (mainly because every media personality, journalist, etc uses it).

Also worth noting that 80% of twitter’s “content” comes from 10% of users.
