The Official NBA post.

Naw, it was on purpose.
I refuse to call them the Thunder.

The Sonics may cause bad memories though.

Maybe I'll just call them Kevin Durant's team word to Bill Simmons.

Maybe.

After 20+ years of not doing jack, you guys deserved it.

Can the Celtics repeat? They can but won't.
Who's going to win the West? New Orleans.
How will the Lakers play together? Lakers will play well but not come out of the West in the Finals.
How will the Rockets play together? Very Well and defense will keep them in every game.
How will the Blazers do? Possibly 7-8 seed in the playoffs.
Is Dwight Horward going to develop some moves anytime soon? Don't need to to be dominant. But yes he will add some.
How about the 76ers? Middle seed in the Eastern Playoff Picture.
Are the Hornets going to take the #1 seed? Yes.
Who's going to be the ROY? Derrick Rose
pimp.gif

Who's going to be the MVP? Dwayne Wade
pimp.gif

Which team is going to have a breakout season? Miami Heat & Chicago Bulls
pimp.gif

Which team is going to fall off? Detroit Pistons
Is D-Wade going to play like he did in the Olympics? Yes

Ben Gordon hasnot made secret his desire to be a starter, but when the Bulls' season starts on Tuesday night. Gordon will once again be on the bench, the Chicago Tribuneis reporting.

Gordon played in only one preseason game after hurting his left toe, which could be part of the season that he will not be in thestarting lineup.

"I still have to fine-tune everything and catch up," Gordon said. "I might come out and my rhythm is there right away. But not practicing as much as I'd like to, naturally, I think I'll have to find my rhythm."

Gordon again showed enthusiasm to be playing with Derrick Rose, the first overall pick of the 2008 Draft.

"Derrick is a great penetrator. I'm expecting a lot of open shots when he's out there. I think we complement each otherwell."

Dwyane Wade canbecome a free agent in the summer of 2010, but many around the league expect him to remain with the Heat.

The feeling around the NBA is that Wade will sign an extension rather than opting out and entering the market.

The only thing that could hold up the process is Wade's relationship with Pat Riley.
Ewing Jr. Waived; WalshComments
Oct 27, 2008 2:41 PM EST

nyk_40.gif
The Knicks havedecided to cut Patrick Ewing Jr.

Ewing Jr.'s Knick legacy and electrifying play in the final pre-season game made him an instant fan favorite.

But the Knicks apparently decided that Anthony Roberson's shooting ability made him more valuable. Roberson's contract isfully guaranteed while Ewing Jr.'s is not.

The team also did not want to eat the contract of the ineffective Jerome James.

"You start looking at well, what are our potential needs?" Donnie Walsh said. "I think that's where this went downto in the sense that it was felt that in the immediate future, potentially, that shooting could become a problem for this team. So that was the reason forAnthony Roberson because that's what he can do."

The Knicks looked for but could not complete a two-for-1 trade. Walsh said he hopes Ewing Jr. will play in the NBA Development Leagueand the Knicks can bring him back.

"I think he's got a great upside," Walsh said. "As he develops, he's going to be a valuable player bothoffensively and defensively. It's always painful because you have to let somebody go that's worked hard. And he did. He worked very hard and he playedwell. But it's a simple case of 15 vs. 16 and you've got to do something."

Walsh responded to a question about the fans' overwhelming desire to release Jerome James instead: "Let's put it thisway: I have no background with Jerome James, except he did not play last year," Walsh said. "So I understand the fans thinking that. He is undercontract to us and we honor all our contracts. So basically, he's in the position that I've had other players in on this team, which is go out andprove yourself because you didn't play last year. So, we have to see what you are before we know what to do. And there could be a place for him on thisteam. But it'll be up to him to prove it in practice and if he gets a chance to play in the games, play in the games."
Hawks' JohnsonReady Despite Strained Groin
Oct 27, 2008 7:24 AM EST

atl_40.gif
Hawks guard JoeJohnson is expected to be ready for the team's opener on Wednesday despite a strained groin.

"I'm definitely where I need to be. But around this time I don't think anybody can really say they are 100 percent,"Johnson said. "There are always those little bumps and bruises that everybody deals with in this time of year and throughout the rest of theseason.

"I guess if you didn't do anything during the preseason, you might be stress free. But that's probably the only way.Other than that, it's just little bumps and bruises but nothing that will keep you out of a game. All you can really do is nurse it everyday and playthrough whatever pain you might be dealing with at the time."

Teammate Josh Smith left the team's exhibition finale with a sprained right ankle, and sat out the scrimmage portion ofSunday's practice.
Mavericks' CarlisleImpressed With Green
Oct 27, 2008 7:19 AM EST

dal_40.gif
Dallas coachRick Carlisle has been impressed with the play of Gerald Green in the preseason and won't hesitate to use him in the team's opener against theRockets.

"Is he definitely going to be in the rotation against Houston? I don't know," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Would Ihesitate to use him? Absolutely not."

Green has helped provide energy off the bench in his previous stops, but mental miscues have doomed him.

"Based on his preseason, he's certainly in the equation as a guy we got to consider for the rotation," Carlisle said."But in the last game, you saw some of the things that have been his nemeses - over-dribbling a little bit, turnovers, a couple defensive mistakes. But heestablished over the first seven games some real consistency in those areas. So I don't look at those things as super-negatives."

Green believes that he'll learn from Jason Kidd as well.

"You can look at my old teams and the best guard I probably had was Rajon Rondo and I was very proud of him the way hedeveloped," Green said. "But I haven't had a hall of famer.

"There's nobody like Jason Kidd. He sees what you're supposed to do before you do. He'll tell me, 'G, do this andtrust me.' And then you do that, and it works."
Magic Looking At Hudson AsThird PG
Oct 27, 2008 7:13 AM EST

orl_40.gif
The Magic arelooking at Troy Hudson as a possible third point guard heading into the 2008-09 season.

A slot on the roster opened up when Mike Wilks' suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy has said that Hedo Turkoglu and Courtney Lee can help handle the ball.

"Ideally, we'd want to have a third point guard even if you decide to play those guys there at times," he said."From a practice standpoint, if a guy is down, quite honestly, it gets pretty tough to function the way you want to function.

"You're not just going to take anybody. But ideally we'd like to get a third point; I think we're in agreement onthat. It's a matter of can you get what you want."

Eddie Gill could be an option, as well.
Have Blazers BeenBad-Mouthing Miles?
Oct 26, 2008 4:35 PM EST

por_40.gif
The Celticshave been praising Darius Miles, whom they recently released, but two NBA general managers claim that the Blazers have been bad-mouthing the free agentforward.

Miles was bothered by both injuries and off-the-court problems during his five seasons in Portland and was waived April 14. However,if he plays in ten games over the next two seasons, the Blazers will be on the hook for $18 million in salary.

"He can still play, and he also hasn't played in two years, so you have to understand that he will get better," one NBAGM said.

"Too bad Portland is putting out bad information that he is not a good kid. Anything and everything they can say bad they are. It's too bad. He's a nice kid with a bad injury who has fought back. Right now, he's still an NBA player, and he's going to get better. He's going to improve. It will be a smart pick-up for someone."
Mavs Believe They Can Win ItAll
dal_40.gif
Jason Kidd andDirk Nowitzki aren't fazed by all this talk of the Celtics and Lakers meeting in the Finals once again; they believe the Mavericks can win itall.

"Our goal is not to make the playoffs. Our goal has to be a championship team. We can't be satisfied just making theplayoffs," Nowitzki said.

"We're not that far off," Dirk added. "If we can run this offense and stay solid defensively, we can play withanybody in this league."

Kidd, who only played half of the season in Dallas last year, agrees with his teammate.

"I agree with Dirk. We don't talk about making the playoffs. We talk about winning a championship. If you talk about it andsee it, it helps it become reality. If you get in that position, you have to take advantage of it. And we're going to try to take advantage of it,"Kidd said.
Out-Of-Shape MayCausing Problems For Bobcats
Oct 26, 2008 5:09 AM EST

cha_40.gif
The CharlotteBobcats were hoping to have a fit and ready Sean May in 2008-2009 after the forward had knee surgery last season, but May came to training camp out of shapeand had more fouls than rebounds during the exhibition season, the Associated Press is reporting.

"Right now I don't think he's ready to play at all," coach Larry Brown said Saturday. "I think he's trying, but I don't think he's in the kind of shape to be able to compete on this level and do all the things he's capable of doing."

The Bobcats have no depth at the power forward position, and were relying on May to play big minutes.

"I've got to get in better shape. I've got to get in better condition," May said. "I haven't played in solong that, boom, it's hit me smack dab in the face. I'm picking up some early fouls due to being out of position. My timing is a little off. Now, herein a week we're getting ready to play, so I've got to do a lot of work."

Good looks on the updates Tupac.

ESPN's power rankings to start off the season:

2008-09 Power Rankings: Preseason
RANK (LAST WK)TEAMREC.COMMENT
bos.gif
1 (1)Celtics66-16He hasn't done too much in Charlotte, but Michael Jordan has fired up at least one Celtic amid all those doubts about Boston's hunger to repeat. Sayeth Ray Allen: ''MJ told me when you win one, you've just [been] lucky.''
lal.gif
2 (2)Lakers57-25It's a good thing L.A. is so stacked, because it has some history to overcome along with all that tough comp out West. The losing team in the Finals, remember, hasn't won the next season's title since 1989.
nor.gif
3 (3)Hornets56-26Too soon to say Posey's arrival is already paying off? The Hornets have already won something -- they were preseason ''champs'' at 7-0 -- and are third favorites to win it all according to the league's annual survey of GMs.
cle.gif
4 (6)Cavaliers45-37Q: Why are folks like me making such a big deal about the Mo Williams acquisition? A: Because LeBron's Cavs took Boston to seven games in the second round without a No. 2 scorer/shooter in Williams' class.
sas.gif
5 (5)Spurs56-26Is Pop's long, gray, unruly beard meant to mock folks who have written off the Spurs as too old? Better question: Have you considered how dangerous they might be if Manu is healed and rested come playoff time?
hou.gif
6 (4)Rockets55-27Who knows how many games T-Mac, Yao and Ron-Ron actually play together? But I question anyone saying Artest might mess up Houston's chemistry. Mess up what? Houston hasn't won a playoff series since 1997.
det.gif
7 (7)Pistons59-23Who doesn't think the Pistons are slipping? In that league survey of GMs, more than half (55.6 percent) picked the team that didn't make a major offseason move over Cleveland (44.4 percent) to win the Central Division.
phi.gif
8 (
glasses.gif
76ers40-42Funny old game, isn't it? You can go to Duke, go No. 1 overall in the draft, play in major media markets with the Bulls and Clips ... and you can still, as Elton Brand would tell you, find a whole new level of scrutiny in Philly.
uth.gif
9 (9)Jazz54-28An early injury scare with D-Will isn't the best of starts, but he's the last guy I'd worry about in Jazz country. Far bigger question marks, to me, are Utah's suspect D and the pitfalls of having eight potential free agents.
dal.gif
10 (11)Mavericks51-31Just thinking out loud (again): If they won 51 games last season when everyone in Mavsland was so miserable, shouldn't we hold off on all those obituaries until we see how the Mavs look (and feel) under Carlisle?
pho.gif
11 (12)Suns55-27Skepticism was a constant in the D'Antoni Era, when the Suns averaged 58 wins over four seasons. Now? With an older team and such a drastic change in philosophy, you can see why skepticism is through the roof.
tor.gif
12 (10)Raptors41-41There are lots of Jermaine O'Neal haters out there, but we're completely on the other side. Which means we're already sold on the trio of JO, Bosh and Calderon. All our questions, frankly, are about the crew around them.
orl.gif
13 (14)Magic52-30The Magic are big favorites to win their division ... but there's a reason we call it the Southleast. Dangerous as Rashard, Hedo and Dwight are, doubts persist when the starting guards are Jameer Nelson and Mickael Pietrus.
por.gif
14 (13)Trail Blazers41-41I know, I know: Oden had a rough preseason and eight of Portland's top 10 players are 25 or younger. But after the Blazers played .500 ball without Oden and Rudy Fernandez, where's the fun in preaching patience?
den.gif
15 (18)Nuggets50-32George Karl keeps trying to tell us that the Nuggets won't fall as far without Marcus Camby as most media pests claim. Of course, even if he's right, No. 8 in the West is realistically the highest Denver can finish.
was.gif
16 (15)Wizards43-39Someone asked me the other day if the Wiz can stay competitive while Arenas is out, as if that would be sufficient. After re-upping Gil for $111 mil? Proving they can continue to win without him isn't much consolation.
chi.gif
17 (17)Bulls33-49Maybe rookies Rose and Del Negro can overcome Chicago's low-post limitations and glut of guards to lead a postseason run. But who wants to go out on that limb after last season's team underachieved so badly?
gsw.gif
18 (20)Warriors48-34With Baron Davis in L.A., Monta Ellis out indefinitely and unmistakable tension in the front office, Golden State is asking its famously patient fans to be understanding again. At least there's some good young talent here.
lac.gif
19 (19)Clippers23-59On paper? Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Al Thornton, Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby are an intriguing fivesome. On hardwood? Hard to say when Camby didn't play any exhibition games and Baron played in one of eight.
atl.gif
20 (22)Hawks37-45It's true they played the Celts far closer in the playoffs than the Lakers did. Yet it's also true that the Hawks, beyond their solid starting five, have no depth to combat the much tougher competition for the East's No. 8 seed.
mil.gif
21 (16)Bucks26-56We normally don't like to make too much of preseason results, but the Bucks' 1-7 showing suggests that we might have underestimated the size of the task Skiles and new GM John Hammond have taken on here.
ind.gif
22 (25)Pacers36-46You know by now that the committee (of one) never tires of trotting out our pet Indy .500 line, but the sense here remains that the Pacers will wind up below it again, even if Dunleavy shakes his early knee problem.
mia.gif
23 (24)Heat15-67With the holes they have at point guard and center -- and a serious lack of depth, too -- let's be honest: D-Wade might have to be better than he was in the '06 Finals if he wants to take the Heat to the '09 playoffs.
min.gif
24 (28)Timberwolves22-60The theory, if you subscribe, is that the Wolves have flanked Al Jefferson with multiple quality shooters ... and that players named Kevin (Love, in this case) tend to do well in this town. We haven't subscribed yet.
cha.gif
25 (21)Bobcats32-50If you noticed that the Bobcats went 0-8 in exhibition play and then found yourself wondering why Larry Brown ever agreed to take this job after his Knicks nightmare, here's your answer: It's the only job Larry could get.
nyk.gif
26 (26)Knicks23-59I, for one, am fascinated to see how long it takes D'Antoni and Walsh to bring winning back to MSG. But Marbury's still here, which sadly will be all anyone talks about (along with the latest Isiah episode) until Steph goes.
njn.gif
27 (27)Nets34-48As if a full-on rebuilding project isn't tough enough for Nets die-hards to digest, now we're being told that arena construction in Brooklyn is on hold indefinitely. Do we even bother mentioning LeBron without Brooklyn?
sac.gif
28 (23)Kings38-44Like the way Adande said it recently: The scrappy Kings will give you everything they've got, but unfortunately that (probably) won't be a whole lot. Especially early, with Brad Miller suspended for the first five games.
mem.gif
29 (29)Grizzlies22-60With the highlight-reel potential Gay and Mayo have, Memphis had a real shot to rank as my favorite lottery-bound team this season. Then the Kings inked our guy Bobby Brown over the summer, denying the Grizz yet again.
okc.gif
30 (30)Thunder20-62Might be misleading to say that Kevin Durant and Co. have nothing to play for in their maiden season in Oklahoma City. You have to figure they've got a shot to be crowned Most Raucously Supported Bad Team in NBA history.
