yes, u can still use your mac without the battery in it as long as the power is connected. and, i basically use my MBP as a desktop replacement so it's always plugged in. but i try to cycle the battery at least twice a month to keep it fresh as possible

Handbrake is GREAT. Very easy to use, takes about 35-40mins for me to copy a 2hr DVD with good quality.
