THE OFFICIAL AIR MAX 1 THREAD

I'm no expert in foam or PU construction and it's properties, but they paint the midsoles on pretty much all retro shoes so the denser midsoles on the AM1s prevent cracking/chipping since they don't compress at all.
The texture on the AM1 midsoles probably help with that too. I'm probably talking out my *** so I could be wrong. Cost saving is always a factor too.

That's too bad. I remember back in the day each step was so amazing, even for little kids. The compression felt like revolutionary technology compared to the dense foam of typical shoes on the market then. It blows my mind that Nike can't/won't replicate that with the AM1, 90s, and 95s. Only exception I've felt is the Infrared 90s from 2020, which really have that OG squish to them. Why Nike, why?!
AM1 hasn't changed all that much, it's just 35 year old tech at this point. It's like asking why a TV from 1987 doesn't have the same picture as a 2023 model. If you want comfort, go with the new tech.

If they ever make an AM1 with a React sole, sign me up for 10 pairs. Mad at myself for not buying more of the flyknits. They need to bring those back asap.

I forgot I still have these. Off to goat they go

Nah, it's changed. You used to be able to feel the midsole/air compress; they were never bricks like they are these days. The TV analogy doesn't hold here. Probably closed cell PU vs. open cell of the past, and perhaps diff overall composition to save money, and enable them to paint them without cracking.

Got a new friend at Jcrew Wythe Ave. Worker there been helping me out.... stopped by to voice my concern with fit issues with the Classic and Slim shirts and to also meet her in person.

I mean I have pairs from 2003 and I don't feel much difference in the new pairs, on the midsole at least. Liner has more padding so they are more snug and cushy inside but the midsole feels the same. You can blame the shoe but it's our expectations of what comfy is that's changed the most. AM1 was never as comfy as React/Boost.

100%. I'm not comparing React/Boost. I'm comparing with OG days. And yes, I do recall feeling the compression ;-).

First, I call ******** on you remembering the comfort from 1987 enough to compare to today.

Second, if you'd been wearing Chuck's or Superstars for 5 years and then put on an AM1 in 1987, it would have felt fantastic compared to those.. In 2023, if you wear other pairs with new tech and then put in AM1, they feel like bricks. So it's all relevant.

But it's cool, you think Am1 are bricks. I get it, they aren't the most comfy thing these else. Wear something else. 🤷‍♂️

That Ultra series/run from back in 2016/2017 were some of the best things ever. AM1 Ultra Flyknit, Presto Ultra Flyknit, AM90 Flyknit... I think there were AF1 Ultras and Huarache Ultras, too, right? They really have to bring those back.

Agree. I wore the AM90 Infrared last week. So damn comfy and still look good. Really good daily wear shoes. The AM1 og reds were down to $50 at one point. I really need to stop buying so much stuff I kinda like and just hoard the stuff I really like.

I remember getting a pair of those AM1 Ultra Flyknits and being excited about the prospect of improved comfort with the look of a AM1. I found that the fit of those were way too narrow for my foot. I ended up returning them.

edit:
They were the ID versions I made

The materials on that ^ and other some of the other colorways released at that time were the worst. The mudguard, mesh and panels were as cheap of material they have.
I agree. Even the paint on the midsole didn't last very long.
However, they're probably one of the most comfortable am1s in the collection.
Not sure if that's due to the cheaper materials or bc it's a womens sz.
