The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- Cannonier, Imavov, Reyes, Rosas on NOW

Nothing cormier can say to make me root for that doofus jones. If dc wants to be a heel also then maybe he thinks being a heel will help him out against jones.

Sure didn't the first time...and I doubt it will again. DC needs to ****. To be talking all this yang after Jones not only beat but DOMINATED you just makes DC look bad. Yeah be happy but we all saw what Jones did to you bruh...you ain't that nice.

Dude needs to quietly enjoy the fruits of being a paper champion and train unitl Jones gets right. Talk after you beat that man in the Octagon.

If DC wanted more attention he could've just sat back and let UFC handle it. A majority of fans still consider Jones to be the real champion. UFC doesn't want that. They want us to see DC as the true undisputed champion and they're gonna do whatever they have to, to try and change how ppl see things. Just on that UFC show on FS1, they basically had a special tribute to him winning the belt with videos sent him from his family and friends.

Not sure I agree with the idea that the UFC wants Cormier, not Jones to be their LHW champ.

At days end business is business and Jones' heeldom coupled with his issues outside of the octagon only generate more buzz.

We can argue whether or not that kind of negative buzz is worthwhile in the long run 'til we're blue in the face.

Fact is Jones is a transcendent star and Cormier just isn't. Jones could very well move up in weight and be a contender, possibly a champion. Cormier can't. This is Cormier's ceiling, right here.

We've yet to see Jones' ceiling. As much as I like Cormier and as much as I dislike Jones I have to believe that Jones is who the UFC wants as their LHW champ.

Of course they had to strip Jones, they absolutely had to. That's not an indictment on his business appeal however. The UFC as still a relatively young company (at least as far as mainstream pro sports go) has to be sure that they market MMA in the right light. We're still in a world where MMA is banned in NY. There are still gross misconceptions and stereotypes about MMA and those who compete in the sport.

So of course the UFC has to tread lightly. BUT, at the same time the UFC is a business and Dana & Co definitely see the silver lining here.

Whereas a rematch between Jones and Cormier was pretty unnecessary before, now that Jones was stripped and Cormier subsequently went on to capture the title, it sets up a rematch that could very well sell more than their first bout.

Jones' run-ins with the law have only elevated his profile, albeit in a negative manner. At days end however, the UFC would love nothing more than for Jones to overcome his issues and take back the title.

Besides Connor and Rhonda, no one in the UFC has that it factor.

But at the same time, it's partly the UFC's fault. It's part marketing, part performance and part character. Personally, Kobe comes off like a square but the NBA marketing and his work on the court have cemented him as a star. It also helps to have Sports Center, media outlets, etc.

And I'm happy DC won the title but even he knows the truth, hence why he called out JBJ. The only way he can have legitimacy is by beating Jones. I'd like to see a DC/Gustafson fight though. That's probably the only other compelling title fight at LHW.

tbh it's one in a million for MMA to have mainstream stars. Public still doesn't take it seriously, so no matter what the UFC does to promote someone, there is a ceiling there

Rhonda and Conor honestly didn't even do much and look at what they've created for themselves. The UFC didn't even have to push them and they would have the same exposure/impact on the public

Who knows maybe when NYC allows MMA it will be the start of something big

Idk if UFC has any mainstream stars besides Rousey. McGregor maybe a star in the MMA world and UFC/Fox have been trying to push him as a star but he's not. Dude walks down the street in Hollywood or wherever the stars and TMZ type photographers go and a majority of people would have no clue who he is. And I agree that Jones isn't a mainstream star either. When he was arrested for the hit-and-run, ESPN hardly talked about it on tv. UFC's next biggest star behind Rousey maybe Dana White.

No he's not. And he never will be. Unfortunately for him, he lacks the one trait all stars share: charisma.

Couldn't care less about charisma b. Don't need charisma to be an effective heel.

He has the single greatest hallmark all transcendent fighters really have, talent.

Doesn't hurt that he's only 27 and will likely enjoy greater longevity than GSP & Silva.

I'm not even a fan but if you can't objectively look at him and say he isn't a transcendent star. That's simply a ridiculous argument to try to make.

Fact is Cormier 36, nearly a decade older than Jones.

Period.

If you honestly believe the UFC 'wants' Cormier to be "the guy" then I have a bridge to sell you.

:{ :lol

You're missing the point. What I said was the UFC wants the fans to think of DC as the Undisputed 205 champion and not Jones. Which is why people in the MMA media made a big deal about it when Buffer announced DC as the new Undisputed champion. No one said UFC wants DC to be the guy. They just want the fans and media to think of and consider him the real 205 champ because its best for them business wise at the moment. Ppl considering Jones the real champ doesn't do anything for UFC right now. And if they try to match up DC vs Bader/Gus/anyone right now, ppl thinking his belt doesn't mean anything hurts the ppv numbers of the card. Fact.

Buffer almost always refers to new champions as the "new UNDISPUTED blah blah champion of deez nuts"

:lol C'mon bruh.

I think you're reading too far into that.

Nobody is copping a PPV off the strength of Cormier alone, he'll always have to co-main with another title bout or another high profile 5 rounder.

UFC lip service isn't going to make anyone feel any differently about the situation.

I wonder what fight fans (including myself ) would say if DC vs jbj had the same ending as say the Gus fight. I think most fans wouldn't give DC crap because it would of been split unlike the the whooping jones have him.

Also Tia isn't what the ufc wanted to happen, it's just cuz jbj is an idiot now a 36 yr old guy is the champ at 205, I really wonder how long is it till jokes is back Nd or even how long DC defends the strap

Just saying is jbj moved up to heavy weight would pay so much mine to watch him bang with cain

Would be the ultimate **** you to DC if Jones came back and moved right to HW.

:lol

So many fun hypothetical fights await.

lol agreed. but nobody's beating him till JJ comes back. maybe if weidman moved up or something.

Craziest thing I've ever read. Jones is to the UFC what Lebron is to the NBA (minus his out of the cage problems). The Rondy Rousey thing is just a spectacle, no one really is going to start watching MMA because a girl is beating the crap out of other girls. The UFC knows this too.

I don't agree with how only jones can move up and contend. Cormier can move back up in weight and contend at HW again. Besides his bff Cain, he has a good chance of beating all the other guys.

rousey is probably their biggest star right now and gets the most mainstream attention. I think she's ugly so her being put in movies is surprising to me.

Rousey gets movies cause she's the biggest star right now and cause of her brash and ****** attitude. She's basically playing a form of herself in every movie she's in.

I agree Rousey is their biggest mainstream star. She's not hideous...and in the absence of other options she gets the nod for movie roles and other crossover opportunities

I would have to agree, DC could easily contend at HW and has proven it. Are you guys watching these big guys loaf around and wing punches
laugh.gif
DC and Cain flourish at that division because they're so much quicker and more agile

DC could Def contend at HW without much problems.. I don't see anyone beating him until Jones returns.

Only person I could see is maybe Alexander since he had dat takedown D against jones

I give ZERO dambs about Bader v DC, give me Gus v DC off the bat
laugh.gif
but nah they're going to give it to Bader since he's on a winning streak and since he crashed the press conference on some fake crap

Watching DC absorb that A-Bomb from Johnson leads me to believe DC would weather Gus' flurries and eventually work for clinches and takedowns. I think DC would end up subbing Gus too or win the decision. DC is going to beat Bader any way he wants to
