If you really think about it, this upcoming season is going to be the first time in his career where he's playing in a structured basketball system that's not centered around him and his brothers. It's going to be interesting to see how he adjusts. Hopefully they can teach him some fundamentals and show him how to play defense.

Even watching the little bit of the jba that I saw, he developed a lot of bad habits.
 
How is he still an “amateur?” I mean he got paid to play and he has his own shoe deal. It makes little sense to me how this works out. Honestly, he might have to deal with the same stuff Enis Kanter did when he tried to play at Kentucky.

I just don’t see how this works out. Should have done this off the bat honestly.
 
I doubt he goes back to the JBA. I could see him going back overseas, or going to the new structured G League and getting paid for it.

Well, he doesn’t have a shoe deal. His dad has a shoe company and named a shoe after him.

Perhaps Lavar and his legal guys found a way to hold Melo checks in some sort of trust account? Who knows.

So is Melo still considered a JR in HS eligibility? If he shows some promise I could see him going for the G league next year.

Also will the JBA fold? It seems year one was a flop, have to wonder what some of the players are feeling. I mean some might have at least been able to play JuCo and perhaps transfer to a D1 a year or two later.
 
I'm guessing he was doing home school work to keep general eligibility to just keep pace to graduate?

I don't know man. I though lavar boasted about players getting paid. I don't see how there isn't any resistance to this by area athletic associations. I've heard of less eligibility issues for some players who can't get to play hs sports, let alone all he has went through.


Great timing though with the start of college ball tonight.

So he’s once again eligible to be a McDonald’s All-American or nah? Would Lavar allow him to be in the Jordan Brand Classic or Nike Hoops Summit?

Covered the paper trail and had a plan B for Melo all along. I'm going to be curious to see how far along he is in his development. Team he's playing for right now, if I'm not mistaken, is trash. Might have free reign to do some of the same **** he did at Chino Hills, but dudes are gonna be going for his neck.

Someone fill me in....is Melo eligible for NCAA or is this just a pit stop before the G-League?
 
I was under the impression that once you sign with an agent it negates your eligibility. Guess I was wrong.

With all the news dropping today, I honestly wouldn't be shocked if Melo didn't actually "sign" with the agent.

If this dude actually plays a full prep season, someone gave Lavar some REAL good advice concerning Melo.
 


So after talking all that trash about the NCAA, and his father even creating a league as an alternative to playing NCAA basketball, now mellow wants to play college ball, I'm not really sure what message this sends about the JBa when its own founders son would rather play in college than the league he created.

Regardless, this is a great move for Melo. it's going to be interesting to see if he's even eligible. I thought that he signed with an agent therefore making him ineligible but no one knows for sure and I'm sure Lavar isn't going to hand over any paperwork.

Honestly, we don't even know if lamelo is even good anymore. He was a highly ranked Prospect last year, but when you're in high school a year out of the spotlight and not playing against Elite high school competition can make a big difference.

It does. Technically SPIRE is a prep school. They play against other prep schools/NCAA JV teams/small JUCOS. He can't go to a regular high school.

I called this as a possible option while they were in Lithuania...but I used IMG Academy as an example. I don't see how the NCAA will let him slide though. Even if they find a loophole around the sig shoe...it's going to be hard to prove he didn't receive any benefits from Vytautas Prienai and the JBA contract was public news.

Enes Kanter played prep school ball in Cali and tried to go to Kentucky. The NCAA deemed that the 33K he received at 16 from a Turkish club was excessive, which made him ineligible.

So use that number as a benchmark for what they'll have to prove Lamelo saw less than.

That explains how he can play now but yes I agree about what he did is probably comparable to Enes

As soon as the NBA announced payment for HS in the G League, the JBA was dead in the water. Big Lavar saw the writing on the wall and adjusted accordingly. Just looks like they’re going through a rebrand with Melo.

In a couple weeks once Melo drops 40 on someone’s head, he’ll be the darling of ESPN and the world again

Not sure why you would think he wouldn’t be good anymore? He only got bigger faster and stronger and his offense never suffered regardless who he played against.. defense is a different story.

I’m on the fence. I get that a scholarship is “payment” of sorts but I don’t think that’s enough in relation to what they produce. With that said I don’t know what the fix is and no matter what’s changed it will never be enough
