The College Basketball Post

Makes sense. It's a smooth transition and he's been the lead recruiter for awhile.

Yep and this is who Roy wanted to replace him. Apparently the players love Hubert and I think it would be a dope thing to have a black HC at UNC.

One thing about the basketball program is that they need to model the football team’s social media presence. That’s what these kids love and having guys on the coaching staff that post frequently and often is only going to benefit the team

What we’re hearing about the North Carolina coaching search

Things are happening fast. And as far as the North Carolina head coaching search is concerned, it was always going to be that way. When UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham spoke with reporters on Thursday — the day Roy Williams announced his retirement — he said, “I want to go as quickly as we can.”

In the days since, Cunningham has done just that. Here’s what The Athletic is hearing about that timeline, as well as the search for Williams’ successor:

• First, an university announcement is expected this week, according to sources close to the search, and could come as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. Cunningham conducted interviews over the weekend, but no hire is expected to be announced before Monday night’s national championship between Gonzaga and Baylor.

• About eight candidates have interviewed for the job, a source said, with a mixture of in-the-family and external candidates. Among those in the family are current assistants Hubert Davis and Steve Robinson; UNC Greensboro coach Wes Miller; and Vanderbilt coach Jerry Stackhouse. Villanova coach Jay Wright, whose Wildcats defeated Williams’ Tar Heels in the 2016 national title game, was approached, multiple sources say, but Wright has no intention of leaving. Last year he was a candidate for — and turned down — the Philadelphia 76ers’ vacancy.

• Among the in-house candidates interviewed, Davis has emerged as a strong candidate, multiple sources have indicated to The Athletic. Davis, who turns 51 in May, has spent nine seasons on Williams’ bench as an assistant and has earned a reputation as a savvy recruiter and a key cog in UNC’s player development system. Davis previously worked as an ESPN analyst, and before that, he spent 12 years in the NBA. He still holds the UNC record for highest 3-point percentage (43.5 percent).

• One benefit if Davis is tapped is his knowledge not just of North Carolina’s history, but also his relationship with the current players and incoming recruits. One reason Cunningham is moving so quickly is because of the need to re-recruit the current roster and the transfer portal. UNC has already lost forwards Walker Kessler, Day’Ron Sharpe, and Sterling Manley since the season ended and almost undoubtedly will need to add a player or two through the portal. If Davis is promoted, the sense is that there is a better chance Armando Bacot and Garrison Brooks would return to Chapel Hill. Both have strong relationships with Davis and would be motivated to help him succeed, rather than potentially declaring for the NBA Draft or transferring.

• Cunningham said Thursday he hoped to speak with multiple generations of Tar Heels — from Phil Ford to Marcus Paige, for example — during the search process. That, too, has happened. For example, Cunningham reached out to Kenny “The Jet” Smith, who relayed his support for Davis.

• As far as potential outside-the-family candidates, Gonzaga coach Mark Few has remained a topic of conversation both because of his success and his close friendship with Williams. But with Gonzaga set to play in the national title game Monday night, it’s difficult to envision Few jumping ship so quickly thereafter, especially considering the desire to announce a replacement this week.

• Williams did not elaborate on his thoughts of a potential successor at his news conference, but Cunningham said Williams “absolutely” would have a say in the process, and added Williams already had relayed his recommendations to him and chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz. That is the case, with Williams having shared his thoughts both before and since announcing his retirement.

And in other news the BIGGEST BUM in Carolina history is still in his feelings 10 years later smh... So thankful Kendall Marshall saved us

This is wild on soooo many levels to me.

This dude picked up his ball, in the middle of the night, and went home without telling his teammates or coaches and had his dad call Roy like 2 days later just because he lost his starting job.

Ironic considering how much the team improved when Kendall took over. Staring him over Larry was actually a coaching move.

Inb4 Sonny* “Larry drew was actually good on UCLA!!!”

Well he was garbage at UNC so we don’t really care man lmao

Head Coach Hubert Davis :pimp:

complete unknown since Roy did everything

Just Add a new assistant who's good at recruiting or X's and O's
