The 2012 NFL Draft Thread, 4/26 8EST/5PST Vikings are on the clock

And so was Seattle apparently. Bill Polian said that Luck and Griffin were the two best QB prospects he had come across since Peyton Manning. Those dismissing this as just another desperate splash move by Snyder are off base IMO.

Yes the team still has needs and a rookie QB won't fix those, but look at the Giants trading up for Eli Manning and how he's brought them two Super Bowls in the past 8 years. Griffin just turned 22 and could conceivably be the face of the franchise for the next 10-12 years. If they are that sold on him (which they are) then IMO it's worth it to do what you need to make sure you get him. Aside from his measurables and stats, he is one of the most impressive guys as far as personality, intellect, and his approach and mental acuity for the game go. He is an excellent teammate and a guy players will want to play with and win for. He is the epitome of everything you would want in a guy to represent your franchise and the city. Obviously it's not a guarantee he will reach that level of success but it's not a guarantee that our next three first rounders will bring us that success either. Orakpo, Trent Williams, and Ryan Kerrigan were all fairly high first round picks and we were still a mediocre to poor team with them. I'd trade all three of those guys for a franchise QB like Rodgers, Brady, Eli, Peyton, Brees, etc in a hot second.

We have $40 mil in cap space and there is a pretty deep class of FA wide receivers. The line is still a question mark but looked worse than it should have due to being decimated by injuries and Trent's suspension last year (not to mention poor QB play). We will still have all the rest of our draft picks in the coming years, and we have plenty of current players that were selected outside of the first round (Helu and Perry Riley in the 4th, Fred Davis in the 2nd, Jarvis Jenkins in the 2nd, Royster in the 6th). Shanahan thrived with later round picks in Denver (Rod Smith and the bevy of RB's) so I somewhat trust him to turn those picks into valuable contributors more than I would the previous regime.

Bottom line, we probably won't be a playoff team next year and we gave up a lot, but the future is a HELL of a lot brighter than it was 24 hours ago. I haven't been excited or happy to be a ******** fan since about 05. Hell, I was actually upset that I was forced to attend a game last year because my sister wanted to go for her birthday

That's how down on this team I was. This will be the first time since I've been following the team that we will have a marquee player who's exciting to watch and will draw fans from around the league. You even have Cowboys and Eagles fans in here saying they wish he weren't going to the Skins but they are fans of his and hope he does well as long as he's not playing their team. When was the last time the Skins had a player that anyone said that about? Clinton Portis and Santana Moss are the closest we've come to game breaking playmakers in the past decade

Well put...

and FTR, it's NOT three 1st round picks...we swapped this year and gave up two others.

Lol I know right. Those Hall of Famers have had their teams picking I the top 6 in consecutive years with Rex Grossman and Colt McCoy as quarterbacks.Ya and both guys recent track record shows they both know what there doing still?

The Browns O-line was beat up last year, Steinbach was on IR and Pashos was out for a considerable amount of time. When healthy that line is one of the best in the business. I believe we will stay with Colt and try and get him some play makers outside of the hash marks. Most likely trade down again and stockpile more picks, but if we dont then Claiborne will be the guy I think. Some sort of offensive playmaker will be taken with our 22nd pick. Im hoping we can get Stephen Hill in the second round and Eric Paige in the 4th.

Holmgren and Shanahan are working for the Browns and ******** respectively; two of the least successful franchises in the NFL over the past two decades. Both of them were hired to try and make huge turnarounds and had a lot of work to do when they arrived. Their lack of success so far is more of an indictment of how bad the situations were that they were thrust into; and less of a measuring stick by which their football acumen should be measured IMO. Bill Parcells wasn't able to replicate the success from earlier in his career when he was with the Cowboys and the Dolphins; doesn't mean his opinion shouldn't carry a ton of weight as a HOF coach. Bill Belichick coached the Browns for 5 seasons with very little success; does that invalidate his status as one of the greatest football minds ever or does your point only apply to guys that haven't succeeded lately?

Holmgren and Shanahan have 5 SB appearances, 3 SB titles, and have coached 4 Pro Bowl QB's between them. Again, I think they know what the hell they're talking about when it comes to QB's. If you want to dismiss all that and be shortsighted based on the fact that they weren't able to immediately turn perennial losing franchises into winners, I guess that's your right. I know sports are a "What have you done for me lately?" kinda thing, but come on. By that logic the only guys whose opinions would be worth a damn right now would be those who have great teams right now, and most of them wouldn't be in a position to make a move for Griffin or Luck.

I haven't seen much of the Browns recently but is your corner situation that bad outside of Haden?

Sheldon Brown is our other corner, so yes it is that bad.  A young secondary of Haden, Claiborne and Ward would look pretty good.

If the Browns draft Claiborne their defense could be really good pretty soon.

But wouldn't Blackmon make a ton more sense? Hope Greg Little has progressed well during the offseason and that way Colt at least has a couple solid targets to throw to.

And that second pick, Trent Richardson if he's available....Kirkpatrick possibly.

I think you have to get Colt at least ONE weapon in this draft.

Trent and Kirkpatrick will both be gone by the Browns second pick. I agree that they're going to need to get another receiver but I think they should wait and take Kendall Wright with their 2nd 1st rounder. Re-sign Hillis and draft Lamar Miller, Doug Martin or David Wilson in the 2nd round. Problems solved.

I just want to say Congrats to the ******** fans and organization - although they gave up WAY too much for 1 player - that one player will be a franchise-changing player for years to come.

I was hardpressed in believing the Browns would steal that #2 to get him - but was not expecting any team to give up THREE 1st rounders for one player. Only problem that creates is the lack of young future players to accomodate RG3 - which was the price that was paid - nonetheless.

Also, the Rams just came up big time. They will be contenders for the next 4-5 years with this draft trade.

Gift23, you got me man - I had no idea you guys were willing to give up that much, but ya'll did. RG3 will be outstanding.

AT...Skins didn't give up 3 first round picks.  Swapped this year and gave up two futures.

We still have 7 picks in this years draft, so they can focus on the BPA while filling holes via FA.

Like you said he could be a franchise-changer.  If so, no one will say squat about what the Skins gave up to land him.

So, what's the word on the Browns?  Are they targeting Matt Flynn?

Give me Lamar Miller over David Wilson

Yup...as a matter of fact, give me Lamar Miller over any RB in this draft not named Trent Richardson.  I'd love to see Miller on the Packers.  I think he'd be a great fit.

DoubleJs, technically - you're right - it was two first rounders and just a swap for this year's. Honest to God though - if I was Holmgren and the Browns - I would've gave up exactly what the ******** gave up. But I guess they felt it was too much. But for RG3 - I didn't think so. ******** made the right choice.

It looks like we're probably going to go with Colt as our QB for now. Thing is with Colt McCoy is he's played three different offenses in three years. His offense in college (not sure what style it was), the Wildcat offense with Mangini; and the West Coast offense with Shurmur. He needs time to adjust before he can be accurately judged - and I support giving him another shot, one last time. Other reports have us linked to Flynn.

I'm rooting for RG3 to become successful. Dude is an animal and I think he will prove his worth in his rookie season. I'm so pissed we let him slide...

That's who I'm hoping we scoop up.

I wouldn't eem be mad at that for the #4. Claiborne + Haden + TJ Ward? Our defense in the backfield would be A-1.

how high does everyone think trent will go?

and am i the only one who thinks lamar miller will be the better player in the league?

Doubt he slides that far down, but if you can guys can manage to snatch Trent, the Bengals can be

I believe that the ******** made a bold but wise move to trade up to get either (yes either) RGIII or Andrew Luck. Both QBs are perfect fits for Shannahan's offense and either guy could be the franchise QB the Skins have been looking for since Theismann. Presuming its actually RGIII he could potentially stress a defense so much with those bootlegs off of zone run action that he could give D coordinators fits trying to figure out how to defense them. As a Cowboys fan Im not excited to see RGIII

AND Vick for 4 games a year, I can assure you of that. And remember, the Skins have been doing well building in the draft the last 3 or 4 years and now they have money to play with in free agency to go out and get whichever QB they choose a big time WR. Two first round picks and a second rounder is not too much to pay in my opinion for what could turn out to be the perfect fit for that offense and that team.

There have been rumors about us trying to move up to 13 to the Cardinals spot. He'd have to get by Cleveland, Tampa Bay and KC first.

Just need a deep threat badly

RG3 in a 'skins uniform will be dope. I just have no faith in Snyder. The guy has no sense of team chemistry or continuity and without 2 future first rounders, I worry.
