Spoiler [+]
the final day of wackoooooon as come and its the best lineup by far. youll see what i mean in a bit
before the music starts we take a stroll through the town for breakfast and pass by the famous wacken tower once again. if you recall, i mentioned a not so busy merch booth right at the bottom of the tower. well, they semi-restocked and had the blue wacken shirt which was by far the most popular one at the festival since the official colors this year was blue. i managed to get a size L which fits a little big but im still happy. (still no maiden shirt though
)
so we line up by the entrances to the stage area to make sure we get a good spot. why? because immortal plays at 10pm and they (along with iron maiden) are the reason why my friend and i went to wacken. gates open at 10. do the math and thats 12 hours at the barrier. of course...if we get the barrier.
gates open and the race is off. its actually a LONG way from the entrance to the front of the stage. there are several people in front of me running as well and to my left is my little bro. believe me, he is ATHLETIC (highest vertical and tops in phys ed. cant dribble a basketball worth %#@+ though
). he picks up the speed to sprinting pace and passes pretty much everyone is front of us. straight up man, i was proud of him
.
so all 3 of us grab the barrier a tad to the left of the centre of the black stage. why not the exact middle you ask? crowd surfers and people pushing on your back. fine at a venue with like a few hundred people, but this is a different story
so the first band is at 11, ektomorf. i dunno, they were alright. im not very familiar with their stuff though. not a terrible way to pass 12 hours i suppose
on the true metal stage 50 yrds away is caliban. while at the black stage you can watch bands at the true stage on the big screen. no comment on caliban. so the 3 of us take turns going for food/beer/piss to make sure we keep our spot
up next, original swedish viking metal: unleashed. awwww yeah
. they were awesome man. they played my absolute favorite song from them this is our world now (). they played for about an hour and finished with death metal victory (not the best song but it gets the crowd involved). wicked show and no doubt one of my favorites all summer
next on the true stage which we watch from the screen is overkill. pretty sweet and i really wish i could have seen them up close, but i like immortal much, much more. now that i look back, my brother an my buddy could have saved my spot while i went to the other stage but whatever, bit too late now. anyways, setlist consisted of green and black, rotten to the core, wrecking crew, ironbound, elimination and motorhead song overkill. watching it on the big screen is better than nothing though i suppose. really fun band
back to the black stage and another band i really wanted to see, lock up, has arrived. was nice to see tom lindberg from at the gates even if it wasnt at the gates but goddamn they were good. every time they said, "heres a slow one," it was fast as sin
. i like how their songs are so short so they packed in like 18 songs in one hour.
to help pass the time were old schoolers w.a.s.p. i really enjoyed it. i didnt think i would as much as i did but my friend saw them in tuska and told me they were a big surprise. they put a smile on my face. for gods sake man, just look at their guitars
15 minutes after w.a.s.p. on our side, is *##%*#% cannibal corpse. scalding hail, unleashing the bloodthirsty, sentenced to burn, the wretched spawn, i will kill you, i cum blood, evisceration plague, time to kill is now, death walking terror, make them suffer, priests of sodom, staring through the eyes of the dead, and of course the "last" song, hammer smashed face. after hsf george admits he lied about that being the last song and what cannibal corpse show would it be without stripped raped and strangled?
crowdsurfers were plenty and when the screen showed the mosh pit, it was *##%*#% huge, my god. the only crappy thing was stratovarius was playing at the party stage at the exact same time so i missed out on them. theyll be back in edmonton soon though im sure
immortal...so close. just one more hour and band on the true stage to go. not that bad right? what if that band was someone who you could not stand? in my case, it was edguy
initially, i thought they would be alright, but man it was lame and dreadful (no offense to anyone who likes them
). being from germany they kept milking the crowd for cheap pops and it got really annoying. i really wish it was avantasia this year instead but what can you do right? hell, i would of liked it if noone played at all. after a long hour, it is finally time
appropriately, its dark outside (GRIMMM!). all shall fall kicks in and out comes abbath...tight leather pants included
. every now and then he would lift his leg up to the beat. i dont know if he meant it to be synced to the beat of if he had a wedgie and tried to play if off
. up next, the my favorite immortal song, sons of northern darkness
. its followed by rise of darkness, damned in black, hordes of war, norden on fire, withstand the fall of time (
) and close with one by one. couple times he would stick his face into a camera recording and on the big screen would just be a picture of abbath blown up x50
. he is quite the character. no encore and only one song from at the heart of winter, but one of the best shows i have EVER been to, bar none.
so looking back, was waiting 12 hours in one spot worth it? HELL YEAH. seeing unleashed, lock up, cannibal corpse and immortal while at the barrier at wacken is something ill never forget
we arent done yet as we trekked to the wet stage to check out rotting christ who was really really good. damn shame they started during immortal though. that just doesnt make sense
after rc soulfly over on the true stage but i wasnt feeling it so we pretty much listen from the food area/beer garden and im tired as hell. im too beat to watch fear factory after soulfly so we make our last rounds of the metal market as it was the last night. there are fireworks, fires everywhere and drunken naked people running around screaming "WACKOOOOOOON!!!"
next morning comes and people are destroying their tents and %#@+. i dont know why, but it was funny to watch. like, you ever see that episode of simpsons when homer makes the grill and charges at it with the pole? %#@+ like that
. so we pack up and take the bus to berlin.
