I just got done watching the original trilogy, then I started watching the prequel trilogy and Christensen and Jar Jar binks are honestly my biggest gripes with the prequels. Christensen just sounds like a whiny little baby through episode 2 and 3.

Is this your first time watching them? After Episode I, I swore I'd never wait in line to buy movie tickets ever again, by the time Episode III came out in theaters, it was a struggle to even make it into theaters, yet somehow a sense of nostalgia for my childhood led me to buy the movies on dvd and again on Blu, I guess I'm a sucker for it, and watching them again almost 10 years after the last one, they weren't as terrible as I made them out to be, nor were the originals all as great as I thought they were when I was a kid.

That being said, I'm excited for December, I didn't want to get excited, I was just going to go in with no expectations, but damn if the teaser didn't make me want to know more about the settings and characters.

Canon states the Galactic republic was established about 1000 years before the Clone Wars and ends when Palpatine takes over and turns it into the Galactic Empire.

So the "Old Republic" is a period of around 1000 years.

On Wookiepedia, it states the Galactic Republic was also known referred to as the Old republic. I guess the Old Republic can refer to the period before the Galactic Republic, but I don't think there's much canonical info on that with what we have. Since the old EU is all legends know, all that info is pretty much useless.

SUPER complicated to explain in a short response, basically it seems like they make it up as they go along and for story purposes. From what the movies have shown it's a pretty loose affiliation with member worlds maintaining a great deal of autonomy, and their own defense forms. The Jedi were sent in for special circumstances, but the Republic didn't maintain an army or anything like that. The Core Worlds (those closest to Couruscant) had closer/better relationships than those out in the Outer Rim where gangs basically ran things how they wanted no matter what the Republic said as far as laws.

Not joining your circle jerk over George Lucas is running my mouth about Star Wars in "every thread". Keep telling yourself that.

I watched the movies and I only liked 1. Thats all I need to know. But they got the right talents this time around, like stealing the Star Trek director, the screenwriter to the only good one, and the fact that its Disney. So Im interested.

Truth is sunshine, there's WAY too much history out there, both active and inactive, across multiple forms of media for you to get short answers to your questions and still get everything. I've devoured tons of this franchise for 25+ years and still don't know all the details.

Best bet is to watch all 6 films, Clone Wars cartoon, the new Rebels cartoon, and the new books that are out. Then you're ready for 7.

Even having knowledge of the EU is beneficial I think because certain aspects of it brought into canon I think.
