Another Symbiote Host From Marvel Comics Appearing in Venom
It’s been reported that the Marvel Comics character Ann Weying will be appearing in the upcoming
Venom film from Sony, which could mean some worrying times are ahead for Eddie Brock. There are a whole bunch of unanswered questions around the plot for this movie, but the presence of Brock’s ex-wife and her fate in the comics raises even more possibilities.
There has been a huge amount of interest in the development of
Venom, especially since it was announced that
Tom Hardy was taking the lead role. But ever since the spinoff went into pre-production, there was confusion about it how it would relate to the current events in the MCU and Spider-Man himself, especially with the current release of
Spider-Man: Homecoming. Some little clarification has been made in that Sony spokespeople stated it would
exist in the same “reality”, but not necessarily cross over (at least for the time being). Expectations were raised when it was also revealed that the
main villain would be Carnage, one of the most vicious of Eddie Brock’s enemies and also clad in a symbiote suit (the offspring of Venom’s). However it now appears that another familiar character will feature in the plot, and one who is also prone to hosting a symbiote.
That Hashtag Show has revealed that the comics character Ann Weying will definitely play a part in the plot of
Venom. Weying first appeared in
Amazing Spider-Man #375, and she was a successful lawyer who just happened to be Brock’s ex-wife. Having a love/hate relationship with him, she even helped Peter Parker defeat him at one point, realizing that her once-partner had gone completely insane. However the character is probably best known for morphing into She-Venom aka. The Bride of Venom, when events conspired to bond her with the symbiote suit. The character then suffered severe emotional problems caused by her experiences both with the suit and with Brock, leading to a sad fate.
It should be noted that there is absolutely no evidence for supposing that this version of Weying will bond with a symbiote during the runtime of
Venom. Still
, it would admittedly be pretty cool and a great plot twist for the unwary. At the moment, it’s not even been announced what form the symbiote suit will take in the film. It’s been suggested that it could be based on the Ultimate version of Venom, which originated from a protoplasmic goo designed as a cure for cancer, and not the alien Spidey suit that bonded with Peter Parker. That would be a quite neat way of distancing itself from the MCU and Spider-Man, whilst still possibly existing in the same reality. It would also give freedom to spin off in different and mature directions, especially as an
R-rating for the film has also been rumored.
There’s no news on any casting for Weying yet, and any conjecture on the direction for the character is pure guesswork at the moment. However, if the plot were to concentrate on the comics story-arc and her possible emotional and super-villain status, it could make for some compelling moments in the movie, especially if she spars with the intense Hardy. We’ll keep you up to date with further information on
Venom as we get it.
