- Casinos and sports teams not being the same thing means exactly what? are they not both businesses? in order to do business in a state you have to adhere to whatever guidelines and rules come with it. if the state can place a tax on all profits of a Casino they can do the same with a sports team.

Owning a professional team is a serious investment and you take lots of risks in doing it why shouldn't they be rewarded. Players don't take anywhere near the risks and take no financial responsibilities if the whole organization goes belly up.

@ you thinking i need a detailed explaination on how capitalism works.

- i see now when it comes to this argument about  what athletes make what we're really talking about is pure 'hate'. and rarely use that word if ever. its not about the schools, its not about the homeless, not about charity, not about better stadiums and equipment, not even about being fair, its really all about jealousy.

....hmm, hey, well, now i know. applaud you for actually coming up with an answer though.
"hate"

that word get's thrown around every time people have a varying opinion on how things should work. It's quite comical.
- but thats just it though. im not one of 'those people'. and i rarely use the word. if i classify something as 'hate', thats not just me not being able to come up with the words to describe something, thats what it is.

- your detailed explaination spelled nothing but JEALOUSY to a T. another name for jealousy is HATE. im sorry bruh, thats just what it is.

- to better explain it. think of it like this. if you were an professional athlete would you cap your own salary at 30 million and give the rest back to the owner because he's paying you too much? hell no, you'd keep it, just like them. but since your salary doesnt equate to theirs and only because yours doesnt equate to theirs you label them as overpaid.......that makes you a hater (and/or just jealous).

- i mean think about what you're saying. you have no reasons other than you just dont like it. and thats a prime example of hate.

.......hold up. does this make you feel better:

- i see now when it comes to this argument about  what athletes make what we're really talking about is pure 'jealousy'.
-
ohwell.gif

[Jay-Z] males should be jealous, thats a female trait......[/Jay-Z]

it's not even jealousy my whole viewpoint was taken from a business standpoint.

Only in America.

And, no, they don't "deserve" it.

Explain.

I dont think they had to work any harder than a heart surgeon would to get where they are, they should be making great money, but 20 mil a season + plus perks + endorsements....

i dont think anyone deserves that kind of money in this effed up economy we live in....

Finally, there are many more players who can, indeed, "throw up 40pts as entertainingly as Lebron," than there are doctors who can perform brain surgery. (Were you even serious when you made this statement?...

). In fact, given the chance, ANYONE can throw up 40 pts as entertainingly as Lebron. After all, "entertainment" is subjective. Performing brain surgery, on the other hand, is not.

You can't/don't just get up one day, and perform brain surgery. It doesn't work that way. Furthermore, there are far more liabilities associated with performing brain surgery than there are with trying to score 40 pts. That's is why the value of someone who can actually and adequately perform brain surgery, successfully, is much greater than someone who can drop 40 pts, occasionally.

Bottom line, we value an individual like Lebron (monetarily speaking) over a brain surgeon because we have screwed up priorities in this country. If there was a nuclear holocaust that wiped out almost everyone, and I was given the task of rebuilding civilization with a select group of individuals, and it boiled down to Lebron James and some brain surgeon who graduated last in his/her class at his/her respective medical school--best believe I'm selecting the brain surgeon.

Who would you select?...

Thank you. I couldn't have said it better myself.

I didn't actually believe that people really thought these entertainers deserve to get paid more than doctors because they are worth more.

I  mean WOW! Seriously, getting paid millions for something my 8 year old cousin can do, who I actually get more entertainment from.

As I stated in my other post they deserve the money only cause the idiot business peeps at the top making so much more than them, but honestly those guys and the sports players should be getting paid minimum wage. Shoot, janitors are needed more than they are if you think about it.

Society and they business/team owners are effed up in their thinking when they think a basketball player is worth more to society than a doctor.

You're 8 year old fills 20,000 seats every night and sells jerseys, hats, anything with his name on it? Again, the ball in the hoop part is only a part of what these guys actually do.

It doesn't matter how they deserve it. They do. We are talking about money.

Why are yall equating worth= salary? What about the immeasurable benefits of being a doctor such as societal respect and thanks? You can't put a price on someone saying "thanks for saving my life" because those statements are priceless. You can't make a reasonable economic argument for a doctor's salary to be more than an athlete's because they don't bring in more money. Doesn't mean an athlete is worth more to society. Again, where would one get the money to pay a doctor's salary unless one physically took it from the entertainment businesses or drastically increased the prices of healthcare or taxes?

I hate this %%!++#+ argument!

People who say athletes don't "deserve" to be paid what they get annoy me to no end.

1. If a company is worth X amount of dollars and you agree to pay the employees, say, 50% of the profits, whether its Microsoft, the NFL, or a lemonade stand, thats what the employees will be paid.  Whatever that X is, in essence, determines the worth of the employees based on the number of employees.

2. How does anyone determine anyones value in society?  That is a ridiculous thought.  Are doctors more valuable than teachers?  What about priests?  Are the armed forces as important as the police force?  Is there some ranking system I don't know about?

3. Playing professional sports is in no way a simple task.  No disrespect to teachers or priests but just about anyone with the right amount of drive and education could do that.  Making it in professional sports is a combination of high skill level, opportunities, and essentially, luck.  There are about 300 or so players in the NBA...there are possibly 300 teachers in one school district.

I know this argument will never be put to rest because all people see is grown men playing a kid's game making hundreds of millions instead of seeing them as valued employees of large corporation worth close to billions.
