That's exactly why they deserve it. If we value them that much, they deserve to be making this much money.

I see where a lot of you are coming from, and I feel like you're playing devil's advocate. At the end of the day, I fault the country's values. Like someone else said, doctors, teachers and policemen should be paid more and athletes/entertainers should be paid less. The point I'm making is that American's put too much money into entertainer's pockets to, in essence 'escape reality' (as someone put it earlier) when instead, this money should be going to something more practical.

But I'm not going to act holier than thou; the expectations I have for this would only be outlined in a perfect, utopian society, which we are far from and will never reach... HOWEVER we can certainly do better.

The country and most of the country's people have it's priorities out of order. No matter what stance you take on this argument, I'm sure you agree with that statement.

Yea but the players are the main ones responsible for the teams revenue...The fans come to watch the PLAYERS...the fans buy the team merchandise because of the PLAYERS.....
what if the players don't play well? what if they don't draw in a crowd or sell merchandise?
that player probably wouldn't have a huge contract to begin with. If that player is a superstar, then I highly doubt that they would go a full season playing horribly. As for the team being overall terrible, people still pay to see that superstar player just because they are a superstar.
Lebron, Wade, and Bosh just got $100 million dollar contracts in miami, and they will make that team billions of dollars throughout their entire stay there. Not to mention the money they will bring to businesses throughout the city. Should they get paid more?
No. They aren't part owners of the team or any of the local business. Should they get money out of morals ya I guess but this is business the investors are always going to make more than the employees(the players no matter how you wanna look at it).
it seems that you're looking at athletes as if they are just regular employees like how you and I will be at a regular job selling a product. However, the athletes are the product and they are the reason people pay their money. At a regular job, people will come no matter who works there and the business will still be successful. Without certain athletes that team or professional league will not be as successful or even successful at all.

A NBA team is a business everyone but the owners are employees. Some are very talented employees but they are still employees first and foremost when they get to the NBA or at least they used to be. In this day the roles of boss and employee have become almost the same for certain players(the whole Lebron situation and many others we just aren't hearing about). Back in the day Jordan was not making no damn $100 million in salary from the Bulls but he was smart enough to go out and invest and do business deals with many companies which have made dude Very Very wealthy and that is the money he deserves solely. But to bring together my ideas on this topic the players currently are getting a lot of free money, the owners can shift everything down whenever they want if they are all in agreement that things are out of control. Very soon actually they are going to be doing just that they are going to try and bring down the salaries for these huge contracts.

where does the money for the team to even exist come from, bud?

.........so for the third time, if the athletes dont 'deserve' it, then whats your proposal? *ill wait*

They deserve to get paid but not these exorbitant salaries. I propose a cap of $30 million.

*gasp* an answer? ahh !++!.

, however at any rate, since you propose a 30 million dollar cap what happens to the money left over?   AGAIN I ASK: do they owners just get to keep it? as stated, the advertising dollars are still being generated...it has to go somewhere........  what are we doing throwing it in the streets? charity?

- what i propose is what most states do with Casinos and Lotteries. since someone figured out how ineffective it would be to get people to give up their guilty pleasures they opted to get the money another way. if you cant get it coming in the front door, get it coming out the back.

- the trick is to make sure the state uses the money on what its supposed to.

@season vet (I woulda quoted but every time I tried your I'd get that stupid @#$ 404 crickets page

But in any business once the bills get paid, employees get their salaries and whatever part of merchandise sales agreed to in their contracts. the owners split everything else according to their percentages of ownership.

Your proposition would make sense if the state actually owned and operated the sports teams but your plan would never fly in this country.

Why do you keep bringing America into this? This is a worldwide phenomenon. Wth?
Have you heard of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Roger Federer, Michael Schumacher... I could go on forever... stop bashing America just to bash America.

I'm not playing devil's advocate. We are talking about money, plain and simple. Athletes should be paid this much.

You cannot compare the wealth of the nba and teams back when Jordan was playing to the wealth of the nba and teams of today. Had the NBA been this wealthy back then as they're today, trust Jordan would have had the $100 million plus dollar contract. It was way out of the norm back then. Once again without the athletes, there is no NBA. I bet owners have no problem paying players like Kobe Bryant who will never see close to the money that he has made the lakers. We can just agree to disagree.

Don't forget that in his last two seasons w/ The Bulls, Mike made 30+ million. That was in 1997 & 1998, and if you count inflation, he would be making almost 40 million a year if he played right now.

Casinos and sports teams aren't even close to the same thing, though

To answer your question about ownership making money. This is America a capitalist country where people who own a business make more money than the employees that is the whole point of being the owner. If owners made less than the players what would be the incentive for someone to even own a team? Owning a professional team is a serious investment and you take lots of risks in doing it why shouldn't they be rewarded. Players don't take anywhere near the risks and take no financial responsibilities if the whole organization goes belly up.
