Damn that. If I root for a team, that's my team. Screw the city.

What are your teams?
Lakers, Dodgers, Bills. I grew up in NorCal though so I can't really empathize with hometown loyalty. I never meant to go against the grain though either, I just saw Magic play and the choice was made. There's a lot of Dodger fans up here too, my whole family roots for them. With the Bills, I jumped on their bandwagon when they played the Giants in the SB but it never really produced for me has it? Even if they moved to Toronto or wherever I would still be a fan without question. I don't get Sonics fans who didn't follow them to OKC. Those were your players you supported, don't abandon them because of politics. The difference with them and Sacramento though is they will probably get another NBA team someday. I think that's it for Sactown. Even more reason to continue following them.

No real way to deal with it...... Still haven't gotten over the loss of the team. NBA is like nothing to me now. Days like today kill me, seeing Jeff Green get traded for Perkins would be

if the Sonics were still here but it isn't since the team is no longer here. Just little things like that hurt. Overall it sucks, like not being able to read articles about your team, getting excited about playoffs/draft, etc. I guess time heals all wounds though.

Therein lies the difference. I believe a real fan never settles on the players to dictate their fanhood. It's the team, the franchise, its history, and memories associated with this history that are moved. Not even the loss of a superstar in Durant has a beneficial opportunity cost of the removal of a complete franchise.

Hell, at least Lakers kept their original name from when they were Minneapolis. For Seattle, it's as if the entire history of the Sonics is trying to be erased.

Last year when the Thunder had their playoff run, at every home game they showed Clay Bennett on the sidelines when the Thunder were up and the crowd was going crazy. Honestly I haven't been that angry/upset about sports in a long time since that moment. I was at the last Sonics game ever and the entire arena was chanting @%%* Clay Bennett all night. The NBA is kinda dead to me. They were my favorite team growing up but it's just all about money. damn.

QFT. The Kings are dead to me the second the move is official. Until then, I will root for them with everything I have

It still hurts a lot. You don't have that attachment or sense of pride in knowing that something is "yours" when a team leave.

Teams represent cities and when they play games, the people that live or associate themselves with that city, feel like it's THEM playing the games.
Sure, you may get that same feeling watching a player in the league that grew up in your hometown, but it's not to the same magnitude as watching an individual as opposed to an entire team.

The grudge that us Sonics fans have is that, for the most part, we filled our seats. Our team was really taken away based on the argument that there were not enough seats (bigger venue), not that we didn't fill them.

I know it's about making money, but the message that Stern is sending to fans and consumers is:
"If at any time we feel you're not making enough money for us, we can take your team," as opposed to:
"If we feel that the fan base is dying, and for the most part not supportive, we may move your team."

Players and fans have done more for this league than anyone in a suit and tie; including David Stern.

Kings fan this may sound extremely corny and cliche, but don't let Stern or anyone else in a suit and tie steal the memories you've accumulated as a fan. They can take the damn team out of your city, but they can't take the team away from your heart.

On another note, it's GREEN and GOLD forever for me.

I'm a huge fan of Durant and Westbrook, but the whole organization can !++# themselves.
It's kinda weird because during the Lakers/OKC playoff matchup, i found myself rooting for them one second then the next I was hoping they would get their @#% kicked
ohwell.gif

!**+ sucks but I can't even be mad at OKC fans.

To answer OP though, when the Sonics left, I just started rooting for the Hornets since that was the team I was lowkey rooting for because of Chris Paul.

To be fair about the last part, the former owner holds the rights to the name "SuperSonics" I believe, so Oklahoma City wasn't allowed to name them the Sonics. Former owner said he won't allow any team to be named SuperSonics unless they reside in Seattle.

as much i could care less about the kings, they shouldnt move. they're fans are very loyal and deserve them. its really foolish to have them move to anaheim. c'mon thats Lakerland, its hard enough for the clippers already. it'll be even harder for the kings to get a some support being that they were a rival. if anything they should move out to the bay. theyll get their support here and in that case i could get to see my Lakers 4 times a year

Great post, you hit home especially on this last bit, if only because my A's are likely to leave Oakland for San Jose. They'll probably have more prominence in national baseball talk and they'll have a new stadium and bigger payroll, but I will always miss the Oakland Athletics. Civic entities should never be taken away from their natural home (and I do see the irony in that the A's began across the country over a hundred years ago, but I can only speak for myself). I apologize if it seems ridiculous to complain since my team is moving only 40 minutes away, but I empathize with your pain. I just wish I had more words to say.
