Cadillac CT5 to Succeed the ATS, CTS, and XTS Sedans
Brand plans fewer sedans and more crossovers, says Johan de Nysschen

Rumors have been circling that General Motors will unload a number of nameplates, possibly the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Impala and Sonic, to make room for crossovers. While GM hasn’t commented on these reports, Cadillac boss Johan de Nysschen is setting the record straight on plans for his brand.

Speaking with Reuters, de Nysschen said that a single new car called the Cadillac CT5 will take the place of the current XTS, CTS, and ATS sedans. The three models, which won’t have direct replacements, end their life cycles in 2019.

“We have to rebalance our sedan portfolio,” de Nysschen said.

The new CT5 will enter production at the current ATS and CTS factory in Michigan. It will be directed toward customers looking for a sedan in the $35,000-$45,000 price range. An Audi A3-fighter will also be available and will be built in Michigan. Those looking for a higher-end model will have new versions of the CT6 sedan to choose from, with prices for the range starting at $50,000. Today’s 2018 Cadillac CT6 starts at $55,090.

While Cadillac is ready to cut sedans, it will introduce more SUVs. A compact XT4 is the first one on the docket, followed by a large three-row crossover by 2019.

The brand that discontinued the slow-selling ELR is also getting serious about electrified vehicles. Referencing Volvo’s plans to sell only electrified vehicles from 2019, de Nysschen said Cadillac’s plans are “not dissimilar to what Volvo has announced.” Expect new vehicles with electric motors to launch in the second half of the next decade, he said.

Although Cadillac’s sales are up 27 percent globally during the first half of the year, numbers in the U.S. dropped slightly. Overall U.S. sales for Cadillac are down just 1.6 percent in the U.S., but sedan sales for the brand tumbled 16.3 percent.

They're still making the V-Series. That's all that matter..

Nobody ask for those ATS-V's. Same engine as the Vsport but different intervals. Small car but for the same price for a CTS-Vsport 62K?

The prices are ridiculous, 100K for V3 Cadillac CTS-V...

The XTS was whack anyhow.

Trading in my Twin Turbo V next year to get the 2016 CTS-V

Only caddy I'd buy is the CTS-V like said above prices are ridiculous even for the V.

The Lac they was showing during the finals was serious

damn i just got an ats-v 2 months ago lol. Got the coupe. Wanted this to be my sportier fun car since I have a sedan already. dude should've told me I got a throwback now.. its fast af though. I least it for 2 yrs, so its cool, I'll upgrade in a yr.

so much for da spike in more gas guzzling cars

if you didn't already know, crossover/SUV's been erroding sedan market share for years....

for example, da jeep SRT outsells any other SRT product by far.

its more of a reflection of consumer taste changing.

crossovers are taking over. Exactly why Jaguar getting in the game now all they made was sedans and coupes.

I won't even miss these models. GM did a great job on these outgoing Cadillac sedans, but I never same the brand on the same tier the German luxury automakers.

actually they beat da Germans is multiple statistical categories.

problem is Cadillac was too late to change their brand cache'. da 80's were terrrrrrible for GM other than Buick.

My next car was going to be a cts v but then I got a child. So now big body truck is my next whip.

Also a reason why the market has shifted. I'd shoot myself if a get a minivan. Only SUV's.

Cadillac pricing is out of whack to be quite honest. They can only really get away with their MSRP on the Escalade as that vehicle has a certain clout/prestige attached to it. They need to price themselves under the Europeans and on par with the Japanese to establish a foothold.
