Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

I ain’t doing NATHAN for free. You gotta pay me. Like someone said, boys drop racks on cars, strippers, clothing, appliances, etc. but don’t want to break bread on the flip side? Hell nah.

They willing give money to Gucci or Versace’s estate, but not paying producers? Couldn’t be me.

I’m in your bushes, or grandmas bushes

Bizarre was saying that he can have his opinion and don’t have to like the album but he felt him going extra calling it the worst **** he's ever heard etc for Internet views was outta line considering Shady ****** w him and put money in his pocket when his situations were ****** up

He brought up the Shady/D12 world tour they all did around 2008. Apparently Royce wanted to bring Joe on but the rest weren’t feeling it because he had dissed them previously, said Joe was on call with Swifty McVay for 2 hours telling him how he didn’t mean what he said etc

I can kinda see both sides. Bringing up Tyler or Vince is irrelevant tho cmon.

 Just listened to Em's response to Joe.

Imagine...a rap legend...having to play that much damage control to explain why he isn't trash and how he still outsells you...blah blah blah blah.

The inte

Fam, I loved D12 for like 6 months, but really no one cares about these *****s. **** people don't even care about Em anymore.

I'm talking about now. Sure we loved em when Purple Pills came out, but now he's clearly just doing it for attention and to pump up his friends remix. Joe said that **** like a month ago, and now you pop up? It just look like Em hit up whoever on payroll and said yo, get this guy.

Em doesn’t **** with Bizarre and a lot of the other D12 dudes no more and hasn’t for years.

They all got their lil indie moves on other labels

So these producers sending beats prior to payment or any kind of contractual agreement for payment?

almost impossible to get placements without it

rick ross or future posts an email to twitter asking for beats so they can have a good batch next time they go to the studio

you think they listening to snippets or visiting your myflashstore/traktrain of beats and parlaying with you, talking paperwork, if theyre even the one actually checking the email? when they have zay, southside, TM numbers on their phone and often in their same city?

ideally, you send a beat out, they hop on it, and hit you back to handle the back end paperwork for publishing and royalties/ soundexchange and **** but that often doesnt happen

especially in this pre streaming/datpiff/livemixtapes context that chuck inglish is talking about

Producers emailing 20 30 beats to dude's for mixtapes hoping 1 becomes a hit.

sounds crazy but unless you know someone in person or have another way in like your cousin is their road manager or something

this is pretty much the only way for an unknown in his bedroom to get a major placement

it dont even stop at ross level artists, ****** do this with soundcloud rappers too

Makes sense for "nobodies" or those who are building, but these big name producers haven't switched up to sending the beats with some sort of restrictions?

Here's the difference between the idea of getting shafted with the "mixtape" designation as a way to circumvent paying producers now vs 2011 when Party Heart dropped:

That actually was a mixtape. That's BEFORE the streaming service era. It's kind of hard to call something a mixtape when it's being released through software that people pay for. It's literally just a designation....so producers should have a beef if they did work for something that's Apple Music, Spotify, etc. Drake can call More Life a "playlist"...but it's original music that required sample clearances and it was released via paid subscriptions.

As someone who works in a creative field...you don't do pro bono work and then expect to be paid later. It's important to make the distinction between signed producers sending beats to signed artists back in the day...versus the internet era. If Swizz Beats sends 50 beats to Ja Rule and Ja picks one for his album....Swizz Beats ain't gotta worry about chasing Ja down for a check. His publishing label wouldn't dare let that song release for commercial consumption and legalities are already in place to protect his interest.

Fast forward to 2010...if Chuck Inglish sends 50 beats off the humble to Rick Ross...and Ross uses one for a mixtape that he sent to DatPiff and LiveMixtapes...that's on HIM. He shouldn't send ANY beats no more for free and demand a fee if the song is used...regardless if it's for commercial consumption or not. If Rick Ross puts Party Heart on his label backed LP....then we're talking something entirely different. If it Rich Forever releases TODAY...it is an album.

If there is evidence that that song was being performed live...Inglish would have due cause to seek legal action.

so how do you suggest new producers get placements?

im @ that crossroads now where its local ****** in my city potentially getting signed by some big dogs and i want a placement but i also dont wanna just give **** away for free and never see no money or publishing for it

or even the same for a lil baby or marlo type artist thats on that verge/bubble

i know someone who got a placement (did some additional drums/instrumentation/they reworked elements from one of his beats) on DAMN and he said labels will contact you before music is released and work everything out to avoid headaches and that no one “serious” about this **** will just put music out without clearing everything but i dont trust that.
