Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Is Ross more lyrical than Mos Def, or does he put out better or more entertaining music?

Teflon Don maybe.

Doubt it.

Too many great rappers in the history of NY to try cram that ***** in any top 5 list

Does Ross have a booming business portfolio in the D or something?

You and your cousin got some real estate business with him?

It's not even dudes from his city making these claims

Seems like y'all feel the need to prop him up while simultaneously disrespecting BIG which is very interesting

I didn’t bring Biggie up until y’all did, but facts are facts. Saying Big is better than Ross is like saying Bankroll Fresh is better than Lil Baby. ****, even Fresh put out more solo projects than Biggie did.

Like I said, dudes need to say MY FAVORITES instead of saying Top 5

Nobody would say Chris Brown is better than Michael Jackson or Fame is better than Thriller out loud

But rap fans have no problems giving stupid *** Skip Bayless hot takes with the cover of they weren't around for that music....so don't give your opinion on it 🤷‍♂️

It wouldn't to you

Where are Royce, Pharoahe Month, Phonte and Mos Def in your lyrical ranking compared to Ross?

Since you listen to so many lyrical rappers

There are athletic ppl who can’t dunk so by your logic, there are lyrical ppl who can’t rap.

Big is in my top 5 but one could argue that he didn't release enough music.

It's ironic that he hit Nas with the line about his reign on top being short like leprechauns lol
I mean it's not like he stepped down from the position man's got swiss cheesed up :{

I’m a huge BIG fan too and even his mama said he lied in his rhymes. So, do ya’ll paint him as a poser and actor like Ross???????

Lyricism = using punchlines, metaphors, being able to use a BROAD number of topics and subject matter. Having a little bit of wittiness sprinkled in as well. Entendres as well and, things have to flow together.

Someone like famous Dex or Soulja Boy aren’t lyrical. N_ just trash.

Kool G Rap, Kane, Mos Def, Scarface, Spice one. And some modern dudes like mozzy, Kodak and no cap are lyrical..

Why is Ross and Black Thought or Ghostface being compared? :lol:

Being lyrical ain't one thing, one certain style. Ross is lyrical. It's more than enough evidence out there. If dudes don't see it by now that's on them. Ross done did countless records with Nas, Hov and more than held his own.

Can you have lyrics without having depth/substance?

🤔

So how long y’all gonna keep biggie in the top 5? At this point it’s ridiculous. Son was nice, but it ain’t enough music. We can’t talk about his 10+ years of consistency because….. he don’t have it. The impact was crazy and I know for magic and his crew they were in their mid 20s wyling out on Saturday nights so it bring back good memories. At this point it’s like a what could’ve been story. We promise we won’t forget about him, but he not in that no more and y’all still trynna keep it a thing. NY y’all got hov and nas y’all good ok.

Big = Gale Sayers/Barry Sanders/Terrell Davis.

retired early but they GOATs of their era with no real resistance.

What’s the definition of lyrical?
There's categories of lyricism wordplay, storytelling, quotables, mc'in. Lyricism looked different to me since Donald Glover said "more swag, pull back on the punchlines" & his music being more clever, more accessible, & being better overall since.

I don't think either is more lyrical than the other. They just have a different type of music & subject matter. They're both pretty straight forward & can straight vibe guys at times. Just comes down to taste, and a good comparison. Neither has said anything offensive like "i got a phone in jail, that's a cell phone" :smh:

This is a topic that warrants a discussion that needs to be had on a visual platform like IG live b

I understand what you're saying but in reality this opinion doesn't just hold merit to someone like BIG

It's so much other way less talented individuals that stance can be taken with

He made Juicy

This thread needs a weekly IG live show

The platform has a built-in audience and after that it can be taken somewhere larger when the core audience is solidified
