Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

Mush mouth Wale is just not that good of a MC... period... I've tried giving slims songs a chance over and over and he's just not crankin like that... and homies personality makes him unlikable... he do too much cryin... met slim a few times through mutual friends...

When people say this, I wonder if they actually listen to lyrics.

You can talk about his enunciation, clarity or voice, but he can spit lyrics. Lyrically he's up there with Kendrick and Cole.

To me a big part of Wale's slump is his brand, marketing, and his overall perception to the public on social media, writers, etc. You can't underestimate the power of social media and brand perception in the this age. Prime #1 example should be Future.

Bringing up songwriters and saying his music not good enough is kinda off the mark to me. There's a niche out here for everyone these days. He's proved he can move units, sell out tours, etc.

We not talking about James Fauntleroy here. Dude did almost 90k pure sales last time around 1st week.

I wonder if he blames Roc Nation for his image, because he seems like he was out here winging it. I know they have no A&R Development now, but damn. People fresh off the corner handled interviews and fame better than Wale.

He just made so many mistakes early in his career with the rants that tarnished his reputation. As opposed to Cole who had the squeaky clean college kid image.

But he hasn't learned. This was one of the worst interviews I've ever seen an artist do. He was trying so hard to say he doesn't care which means he really cares. Then talking about girls and football like we didn't see him play basketball

I kept hoping Wale would shut the **** up so they could get to some real topics.

The first 10 minutes was entertaining but I didn't need an hour of Wale convincing us that he didn't flop.

Wale had the lane to be great but his talent, work ethic, etc only allowed him to be good. Son had all the publicity, was on first take often etc, things many artists can dream of and didn't take full advantage of his opportunities. He seems bitter but he shouldn't because he made a lot of money, wasn't he on the Forbes list one year?

I don't know about no Forbes list but Wale is doing pretty good. He just cares way too much what other people think. He shouldn't even pay attention to what a media dude like akademiks thinks.

One of the worse things about the interview was Wale breaking down CC White like it was this mad intricate song that people couldn't decipher off one listen lol.

it was a cool record that has been done countless times before... him acting like it was groundbreaking shows you how he thinks he is better than he actually he is.

and the way he went at ole boy was pitiful... im pretty sure dud knows he is a square. Wale attempting to tear dude down based on what he values shows how much the stuff Ackademics says about him hurts him IMO

Maybe that's what it is... his delivery just don't do it for me personally... I've always respected his hustle... He just always came off as conceited... Slim be thinking he's better than he really is... Idk....

The interview isn't nearly as bad as some of you made it out to be. The ones who think it's so bad, it's probably because you always have a negative view of Wale(understandable to a degree)

He basically was saying how you're going to call me corny, when you're you. Akademiks did it passive aggressively, saying I wasn't calling you it. Which is what I'm saying, a lot of the people calling him corny, are the real corny ones.

wale is another artist who would benefit from a youtube channel

he could use that to bring the audience closer to him, show other forms of his art or explain things better without the interviews

he could turn the perception around but he doesn't feel he has to

or his hate towards the fact that he's not perceived to be on a certain level has somewhat paralyzed his attempts

Repped. Came in to say all that. Like fam, you just explained that other artist have done this before but you're expecting the whole music community to have the :eek face? **** wasn't even that nice :lol

I literally laughed out loud when he was going on his tangent about how deep that song was.

While I listened to his new album I kept asking myself what is his role.

Most rappers have a persona and you know what to expect regarding their sound, subject matter, personality etc.
(J. Cole plays the average joe college guy role & you know he isn't gonna come out with an album full of Zaytoven beats)

I don't listen to him enough anymore to know the answer. What's his role / persona?

Cringed when Wale was 'breaking down' his raps.

Like dude...you didn't sell 25k because the music 'went over their heads.' Dude don't get it.

it's sad cause when you rather chill with dj ak than wale

they're both perceived as corny but wale won't accept it

I could never even attempt to explain why I'm cool lol

overall I don't think wale is corny but his reactions to things are if that makes sense (prolly doesn't smh)

boy be doing kanye rant behavior without kanye popularity

it's just not accepted the same, hell its starting to catch up to kanye

Also, this discussion is making me want to abolish the word 'corny' completely lol like calling someone corny is corny to me.

dog wale said ak had his own special corny algorithm

he just renewed the word for atleast 10 more years

he was going hard at ak for atleast 15 minutes lol

Him pushing the album up a week ahead of time, along with choosing the wrong track to push as singles caused the numbers to suffer. But, again, I think that album is flames. :smokin

To be fair though, If I'm not mistaken; his album actually leaked a couple of hours before he released it so pushing it up did at least get ahead of that leak spreading. But then again, tons of people had no idea this was coming on either date so the leak might not have made any difference regardless.

I wanted to hear about the rollout, the single choices and streaming.

I agree, that would've been a way more interesting conversation than him taking blame but then saying it doesn't matter and his shows are more full and engaged than ever behind them smudged *** shades for 58 minutes.

This was annoying as hell. I hadn't heard the song yet so some of the lines were cool, but I completely believe Akademics when he said he legit just forgot, but that **** was so straight forward that I doubt he didn't grasp the concept :lol

I thought Ak handled it well. I would have called him out right there. Like you talking about your high school days is corny. You getting defensive and acting like a broad is corny. You telling me you don't care when you clearly do is corny. I would have had him running off the set in ten minutes. Breaking down a concept that gets done a few times a year. Spitting bars. It was 100x worse than I expected. I think Wale is in a better space mentally because of life and his kid but don't tell me you don't care. Nah
