I dont know that I can agree with DEF. We have given up the second fewest yards in all of football, and are right in the middle of the pack in terms of points given up.Rams were killing him Sunday. And that's with two All-Pro linebackers missing all season and a third All-Pro linebacker missing the last 2 games. The 49er DEF is fine, and will be fine. The OL is a joke. I cant wait until some stupid team signs Mike Iupati to a huge contract simply because he has been a Pro-Bowler and All-Pro.

what i take from this recent matchup (and it's really no different than anything we've seen before) is that when the gameplan goes to hell, for whatever reason, peyton can't adapt as well as thomas. peyton in the elements for one thing is a totally different QB. chester is spot on about belichick > peyton...reason being is that belichick knows how to get peyton off his intended gameplan. he knows how to force him to try and win another way. you throw in weather and injuries mid game and it's a wrap when it comes to belichick v peyton. it goes back to what CP always brings up about peyton always in the same style of offense while brady has had success in different schemes. just makes it easier for brady to change on the fly (that goes in game and in season).

Agree, Tom has an amazing ability to adapt because BB has forced him to adapt year after year, game after game. Could 18 do it? Who knows, he wasn't trained and mentored like 12 was to be able to do it so it's impossible to speculate. Probably Tom's best asset honestly

There's been a lot written lately about Andrew Luck being on pace to break the single-season passing-yards record. While Luck is having a solid year, to what degree can we attribute these gaudy statistics to his dominance? And how much do his numbers merely reflect the era in which he's playing?
Through nine games, Luck has thrown for 3,085 yards. This seems noteworthy since it's only the fifth time in NFL history a quarterback has thrown for more than 3,000 yards through nine games. And the others on that list went on to have four of the top five passing-yard seasons in NFL history. But all of these high-yardage seasons came since 2011. Passing yards per gamekeep increasing as defenders continue to face more restrictions—so we adjusted for this.
Using Pro Football Reference data, we selected the top five passing-yard producers each season since the merger, which gives us 225 individual seasons. We then compared these quarterbacks' passing yards per game to the NFL average passing yards per game for that season. This season Luck is throwing for 342.8 yards per game, which is 40.5 percent above the NFL average of 243.9.
When put this way, Luck isn't on pace to have the best season in NFL history. His current season ranks 23rd in outperforming the NFL average. The "best" season goes to Roman Gabriel in 1973 who threw for 63.2 percent more yards than the NFL average. Dan Fouts put together an impressive run in the late 1970s and early 1980s as he has four of the top 20 seasons on this list. Dan Marino has the highest ranked 16-game season, which if you're defining this sort of excellence as a sustained kind of burn, would make him the most impressive. Marino and Drew Brees each have two. No other player has multiple top 20 seasons.
Luck is a good quarterback playing in an era incredibly favorable to his position. But he's far from being the most dominant compared to his peers.
The clickable and sortable table below has all 225 individual seasons. The way to read the table is in 1984 Dan Marino threw for 54.3 percent more yards than the NFL average. Which ranks fourth all time.

deadspin is always trying to go after luck for something, leave the young gawd alone
... the best season for qb ever was last year by peyton manning and it isnt even close, i dont think anyone has ever said he is having the best season or on pace to have the best season of any qb ever... but he is definitely having the best season for a 3rd year qb ever, and i would love for anyone to try and argue that... they also say that its easier to throw the ball now days with all the rule changes and such, but they dont mention that the defensive lines, defensive ends, linebackers are the most athletic players on the field now days and having to deal with them makes it harder to be a qb in my opinion, especially having the poise to stand in the pocket knowing you are gonna get lit up...

I really hope Ben can finish this season healthy and strong. He's had a lot of good seasons and a few great, but I'd like to see an 'incredible' season from him
