Is there a way to tell a lure is in effect at a pokestop with out obviously seeing ppl standing next to it?

Caught my first pokemon today. Had to use the incense stuff to get them to come to me, as I have never been able to stumble upon one just walking around. What am I doing wrong?
Anyway, caught a pidgey, weedle, rattatat, and venonat. Had a beedrill show up, but that mug broke out of 4 pokeballs (out of the roughly 20 balls I threw at it but missed) before bouncing on me...
As incense is the only way I seem to attract pokemon, anyone know how or where I can get more of it. I'm down to one now.

Just got back home from a pokestop run. I was down to 3 poke balls. Had 52 when I got back. Went to a sports stadium nearby and they had 6 stops. Saw another car stoping at the same time lol.

how do I hatch eggs? I picked up some from the pokestop but I don't see anywhere to get to them or use the egg incubator. Level 5 if that matters

Ugh, saw the shadow of a Pikachu pop up. Dropped everything and looked for 10 minutes. Nothing.
