photoshop help!!! removing white background from image

ok so i've tried a million things including converting it to .gif and then using the magic wand in order to remove the white background but its just notworking!! The magic wand selects the area i need to remove but i hit delete and backspace but it still doesn't work. Any help appreciated!

Filter > Extract

Double click the locked background layer, erase it with the eraser, now do the magic wand and delete.

When you make a new document, make sure the background is transparent. It is set to white by default.
