What machine did Run DMC have behind them in 83/84? **** Clark's American Bandstand was the big show, so from Sugar Hill to them, no other rappers appeared on the show.

Run DMC was definitely on early MTV, once it started playing hip hop, and the movie Krush Groove. In regards to Melle Mel, you sort of proved my point. He was the frontman of the group, and strictly from a lyrical standpoint, Mel was elite in comparison to Rev Run, and DMC. Black Thought is also the frontman of the roots. Was'nt discrediting the other members but, he's the face. And, I stick to what I said about Whodini. They have a great catalogue.

The word "Classic" gets thrown around way too often. Their first album was very solid, but not a classic. Their sophomore album showed growth and was even better. Their third album was a classic and where they peaked. Their next two alums were very solid, but far from classic. The thing is no matter what I say; it's not going to change your opinion. The point of this thread was asking who was bigger, RUN DMC or Outkast. One thing about debuts, normally they get the nod because of the popularity of the artist or era they welcomed in and not the actual album.

Only if you're talking about straight up rapping, with I'd still pick OutKast. But this is based on influence/impact and I think Run-DMC gets that with no question

As far as impact, it's not debateable. Run-DMC was the juggernaut that most hip hop fans across the nation followed and listened to. Outkast clearly made better music, but didn't have the same impact. If you look at each group's prime, BIG, Pac, Nas, Wu-Tang, all rivaled or eclipsed Outkast's influence. No one rivaled Run-DMC's influence (even LL took a back seat to them, and he was that dude at the time). They were on different level than anything that was out.

It was only like 3 groups back with Run DMC...ans if they came any later they wouldn't have made it.
