Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

I'd actually put Joaquin Phoenix second in the race for best actor or even Chiwetel Ejiofor. WOWS was standard Leo or a performance we've already seen from him numerous times in previous movies. Among this year's candidates he doesn't stand out as the best IMO.

Wait, so because Leo's great in pretty much every movie of the last ten years, his job in Wolf comes up lame compared to other actors? Leo was phenomenal, I guess he's the Peyton Manning of movies. On a different level than everyone else but because he does it every year it's not appreciated and is standard.

The Peyton comparison is appropriate however the "different level" portion of your statement is not IMO. When he was nominated for Best Support for Gilbert Grape, he lost out to a deserving Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive.

When he lost out for Best Actor for Aviator (his best shot), he lost out to Jamie Foxx in Ray.

When he lost out again for Best Actor for Blood Diamond (the nomination was a surprise to me from an ok movie), he lost out to Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland.

This year IMO, he has 3 actors ahead of him that gave outstanding performances; McConaughey, Ejiofor, & Joaquin.

I like almost everything Leo has done & think he's an great actor but the WOWS was just an ok movie (waaaay too long) & what we saw from Leo was nothing we haven't seen before from him. Above average performance but not outstanding. I would rate The Departed much higher than WOWS & thought Leo was better in than over WOWS.

I guess, like I said we expect this from him so it's unappreciated. I like Phoenix a lot but I wouldn't give it to him. You don't get praised for being the complete weirdo that you are in real life, on set. The setting, music and visuals is what made Her, not Phoenix.

It would be between Leo and Matty Ice for me. I can't get enough of either of those movies. They were unreal.

I appreciate what he's done but it wasn't better or above the competition at the time. "Thems the breaks" so to speak. I wish more actors did material like Leo. What a lot of the other guys don't understand is that you can make piles of money & do quality work. A lot of these actors go for the cash grabs constantly & do really crap movies.

Edit - BTW, I appreciate the dialog/debate when talking about Leo. I was really expecting feelings to be hurt but I think we've had a decent discussion about this. Thanks fellas... One of the reasons why I love this thread.

This movie is about to be insane with all this talent.
And wasn't Waltz rumored to be a part of this too? If he joins then :eek :eek :eek

Damn, that's nice.

What is it supposed to be about???

"A group of crooked L.A. police officers who realize they must shoot one of their own in order to get away with planning a major heist. They choose as their victim a rookie and honorable young officer, but what they don’t know is that another cop has infiltrated the gang, and is working on a setup.”

Very intriguing cast and story.

I'd love to see everyone be "officially" in but for now it's just strong speculation. Most of them are still in "talks" but supposedly they are all at the edge of making it official.

I remember hearin about that story last year, ok, now I remember. Nice, I like that cast to play that story onscreen, hell yeah.

I don't know anything but why do I get the feeling MBJ will be the "young honorable cop" they choose to sacrifice in the story? :{

He's the only relatively "young" face on that cast list. :lol

If they do, I hope he at least gets a good enough amount of screen time to showcase his acting chops before he's murked.

But man, I think his Fruitvale murder was enough sadness for the next few years, I hope him dying doesn't continue to be a trend in his roles. (where's Wallace?) :{ :lol

My mother never seen, Lean On Me. We watching it now. Morgan played this role like no other.

Pretty sure he already confirmed he was the young cop.

The Purge did 64 million dollars with 34 million opening weekend when the film was made for a measly 3 million bucks.

It’s opening weekend was so strong that it couldn’t be denied.

It’s opening weekend grossed more than any Saw film, and was the fourth best opening weekend horror film behind Friday the 13th Remake, Freddy VS Jason, and Scream 3. None of those were particularly good films, and neither is this, but people went out to see it in DROVES.

It wasn’t as big of a success as The Conjuring, but considering what a great concept they DO have, and considering how much bank they made that first weekend, it only made sense to make a sequel.

It wasn’t as abysmal as something like The Devil Inside, but it wasn’t very good either.

When you have a 63 million dollar come-up when your movie was only 3 million dollars, the studio will listen to you.

^^^ Had no idea the Purge made that kind of money. With those numbers, yes, a sequel was an absolute no-brainer.

the sequel trailer for the purge looks like what everyone thought the first one would've/should've been

I hated the first one with a passion

This Purge sequel should be better and I'll check it out but they need to go full on action thriller with this horror flick. I want some elements of V for Vendetta in the 3rd installment (and there most likely will be one a 3rd one).

Posted this in the RoboCop thread..

I'm just going to frame this short review by saying that I love Robocop, just a couple notches below Batman. In the late 80's, I still remember being Robocop for Halloween. I didn't "get" the film back in those days, but as I got older I started to appreciate Verhoeven's version.

With that said, for any Robocop fan, this is more of an addendum than a reboot or remake. The scenes where Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman are trying to develop Robocop are really good. Everything else is really generic though. Also wish Michael K. Williams was in it more.

In short, it's not the abomination that fanboys are expecting, and I actually enjoyed a lot of it. Unfortunately, I think Padilha did as much as he could with the property, while I'm sure the studio execs were really pushing for more action, which in the end wasn't even that great.

BTW, seeing Kinnaman in the suit was actually pretty awesome. The movement, sounds and even the texture, really looks much better on the big screen.

Would anybody who saw Robocop say it's as good as Dredd? If so I might actually watch it cuz I wasn't planning to. Dredd was solid enough of a remake that I look forward to a sequel. If Robocop is on that level or higher that'd be good at least for the image of remakes.

Nothing won't touch the memories of watching Robocop though. Even the pg 13 version they showed on tv was graphic as ****.
