Oh I'm sorry, Did I Break Your Conversation........Well Allow Me A Movie Thread by S&T

:rollin @ SVU managing to mash together Paula Deen racism, Trayvon Martin tragedy, and stop & frisk all in to one ep.

I got every bit of that from the beginning. But when you don't care about the characters, what's the point?

The tropes annoy me, through and through. I can stand a horror parody because I enjoy the genre. I am entertained by what they parody. But when it's just arrogance and chauvinism through the first 75 minutes, it's tiresome.

Moore's character was fine. It was JGL that annoyed me.

If the purpose of film today is to aggravate the viewer for the majority of film, to have a cutesy ending, and that's a good film? Maybe I don't get it.

Y'all are eating it up like its fried chicken.

Umm... where? There hasn't been a ten page discussion about how it's the greatest relationship film since Annie Hall. The critics liked it, but it's hardly a blockbuster smash either, and short of a few people saying they really liked it, there hasn't been a huge uproar of praise here either.

I wouldn't go see a cheesy, generic horror movie because I know I don't like the genre.. but the same movie you'd love. It's not that difficult to grasp, no reason to get so bent out of shape.

The purpose of the movie wasn't to aggravate you, but if you're this annoyed by the movie then that's kind of on you. You said you hated the accents, I'd be ten dollars if they just had a normal accent you wouldn't find it as grating. But they had the accents in the trailer, so yeah... get over it :lol

saw it yesterday really really enjoyed it.

Ron Howard is amazing behind the camera.

Great plot, beautifully shot scenes...really intense

Don't forget amazing acting.

It had me on the edge of my seat many times. Loved it.

Completely agree with both. I ended up seeing the movie that night after all the games and I absolutely loved it. Instantly my favorite Ron Howard movie and it's not even close imo.

Watching 31 Horror themed movies to celebrate Halloween! Watched Shaun of the Dead to start it off last night and now I'm watching The Lords of Salem but i'm not too impressed with it so far. :rolleyes

New Jack Ryan movie. Looks like a franchise reboot directed by Kenneth Branagh whose also in the movie. Cast includes Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, & Keira Knightley (as Mrs. Ryan).

RIP Tom Clancy.

Really want to see Gravity in IMAX 3D today, but I also know my brother wanted to see it... he and his wife just had a baby, so I highly doubt he'll get a chance to see a movie any time soon.

I'll probably see it and not tell him :lol :{

Happy to see people are enjoying Rush. I want to see it for the fact that it's a Ron Howard film, and that it does look like a good watch.

You're being not only a bad brother, but a bad uncle. :p

Yeah yeah yeah :lol

speaking of new releases, Runner Runner is getting destroyed by critics

Unless I hear some positive reviews from NTers, that one is downgraded to waiting for the rental

Pretty sure I saw just one movie in the theater between my son's birth and his first birthday -- Borat. So, I think your doubts about your bro making it out to the movies are well founded.

I'm going to try and get to Runner Runner tonight J, if I do, I'll speak on it surely. Not that I outweigh critics, but maybe I'll find something worth staring at for 2 hours....... :lol

Started watching The Great Gatsby last night.

Got late so turned it off with about 40 minutes or so left.

Meh. So far it's "ok" I guess, but hasn't blown me away or anything. I do like Leo's performance so far and that of Nick's character, those two butting heads is pretty good, loved the scene where Leo snaps.

Tobey is pointless to me so far tho. Starting to wonder about him, I thought Spiderman was going to unleash him, instead he seems sort of hanging by a thread.

See how it finishes tonight I guess.
Just finished it last night. Like you, I had to split it up into 2 nights as well.

Now, remember how I said sometime earlier this year how annoying it is when people are like 'Oh dude, you totally have to read the book, then you'll love the movie'? I'm not about to be that guy; just wanted to make that clear.

HOWEVA...

It definitely seems that you haven't read the book, because that would 1000% explain Tobey's character. And the only reason I even picked the movie up was because The Great Gatsby is the only novel I've ever enjoyed, front to back.

So I'm not saying 'Dude, read the book, then rewatch it. You'll love it.' But I am saying that your biggest gripe is definitely explained in the first page of the book. It's a narrative about Gatsby, told from the perspective of a neighbor on the inside.

And I definitely thought the movie was ""Enh" also. Loved the ending; solid last 10 minutes. But overall? Enh. Decent.

And one thing I really appreciated that I heard people complaining about: JayZ songs in a movie set in 1920. I LOVED THAT!! And the few songs I heard that were remixed to sound like a 20's hit (Beyonce's 'Crazy')... excellent.

Nothing looks good about Runner Runner. Avoid those JT movies.

Plus you can tell what kind of Affleck performance you're gonna get by the cast surrounding him; Justin Timberlake.

I don't think I'm gonna love gravity. I've read in several places that if you want views on humans place in the world or a philosophical look at the universe like most all time great sci if movies you will be sorely disappointed. Plus not much realism. meh.

I have no idea why someone would pay to see runner runner unless your gf makes you. That movie looks like a huge piece of ****. I respect affleck as a director honestly but he ruins almost every single movie he's in. I couldn't stand him in Argo. He always takes me out of the zone.

Gravity has been getting really good reviews but absolutely no desire to see it

Really want to see Rush though

Man, Gravity looks awesome. But I drew a bit of entertainment from Buried, so yeah. Like I said, the first thing I look for in a movie is a unique human challenge. Past the challenge, whether or not I will enjoy the movie simply depends on the execution of showcasing that challenge to me, the viewer.

Buried alive? Kind of a challenge; not a ton of movies dedicated to that challenge.

In SPACE, disconnected? :eek Sure, a little challenging, and a little unique. :lol

I'm sure it's good and visually stunning I just like my sci if movies a particular way

Gravity was as good as billed. Sands Bullock will be nominated for an Oscar. She was AMAZING, and I hate her.

I hate Sandra Bullock, and I will hate this movie because of it. There's no chance. Same reason I didn't like The Blind Side (besides the obvious awful acting, storytelling, etc.). Hated The Heat as well.

SPOILER. !!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPOILER BELOW.

Saw Prisoners on Wednesday night.

Man, what a powerful but overwhelmingly depressing film. And unfortunately is it not fitting for it coming on the heels of the three Cleveland women that escaped?

What I found interesting was that we found out that Dano's character had the IQ of a 10-year old, and when Jackman was torturing him mercilessly, it was almost like he was doing the same exact thing that he hoped someone was not doing to his child. I mean, yeah Dano's character is like 25 and Jackman refused to believe he wasn't the culprit, but still... the hypocrisy of him sort of torturing a "10-year old".

All four parents were great (Bello, Jackman, Howard, and Howard's wife) as well as Jake Gyllenhall. He was essentially the same EXACT guy he played in Zodiac. It was almost like a continuation off that film. He liked puzzles, he got wrapped up in his work, etc.

A little long for sure, they could've shortened a few parts in the middle.

Thought it was real good, but the "hard to watch" scenes makes this one a one-time viewing for me.

8.5/10

you know its all bad when the tv spot calls runner runner the sexiest and coolest movie of the year :lol

no thanks to gravity. wouldnt be able to handle over an hour of clooney AND bullock? let alone an hour and a half? yikes...

i want to see Rush... Looks awesome.

oh and that movie The Counselor

I just watched The Fighter. Real good movie. Great performance by Christian Bale, he made me forget it was him while I was watching it.

my brother wants to see this but theres like only one showing of it here each day. they will play gravity and runner runner non stop here but not this movie which actually looks good lol go figure

First, the new Bale-Casey Affleck movie looks :eek

Second, the Dallas Buyers Club looks :eek :eek

Third, Runner was alright. It's Rounders without the dialogue. Justin is the one that doesn't fit. He was great in Alpha Dog, solid in Social Network, perfect for Friends With Benefits, but he bothered me in this one.

Ben was Michael Douglas Wall Street (as well as Boiler Room) Gemma is ******g ridiculous, and Anthony Mackie grows on me every time I see him.

Like I said, not the polish of Rounders, but toned that way. Talk fast, move fast, scene fast. Kept it short, 1:45 maybe, played the right cards, showed the world/life, and pulled the cord.

Wondered the whole time tho, what if Ben directed? Maybe he slows the tone. Fleshes it out better, even more tension. This lacked that Rounders, Wall Street, Boiler Room tension. Always felt relaxed, like no one will get hurt. Edge would have been better, and Ben has 3 edge movies in a row.

Iono, a 6.5/10? Maybe 7. Not horrible, just good enough.

Bullock is convincing and Clooney is charming. I'd recommend it to anyone.
