Season four of Dexter was PHENOMENAL. John Lithgow deserved that award more than any other he's ever gotten in his star-studded career. But, with that said, it may drag Season five down with the ending.. I think the show works because of how quirky and socially awkward Dexter is, without you know who, I can see this show taking a dark turn for the worst. Michael C. Hall also gave his best performance on the show. It was cool seeing LaGuerta and Bautista get together too,
.
Yes, skip out on Clash of the Titans. It's just, not exciting. If you want to watch a giant monster movie, go watch Cloverfield again, or go watch some of the oldschool Godzilla/Gamera movies, or Jason and the Argonauts, or the ORIGINAL Clash of the Titans, can't go wrong with Ray Harryhausen.
I thought there were some scenes in Public Enemies that were really good, and the cinematography is gorgeous, but it's just too slow paced. The scene of John Dillinger in the police department was amazing, and then the last 20 minutes were
. Also any scene with Marion Cotillard, like when the dude is trying to have her give up John and takes the beating? She's an amazing actress.
Inception is good, some of the best effects I've ever seen in a movie, on par with Avatar (say what you will, the effects in Avatar are groundbreaking). It's really like the modern-day 2001: A Space Odyssey, doing things we thought we'd never see in movies. Cillian Murphy is one of my favorite actors, it's too bad he can't land a starring role in America. Leo was great, some say Oscar-worthy, I don't know about that. The guy who stole the show for me was Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the zero-gravity fight is TOP NOTCH. Funny story about him, he was on one of the @+!*#% late-night shows (Carson? I don't know), and he was talking about being a child actor, and he said one of the things he bought was a SF2 arcade cabinet,
I have kind of lost hope in Entourage. It's just nothing ground-breaking anymore. I kept track up until last season, and I've caught up, and watched some of this season's episodes, it's still funny, but the "Drama" is gone. Ari is still funny, but other than him, the show has seemed to have lost it's charm IMO...
Leo has
been a good actor. DeNiro has fallen off IMO, too many movies like Meet the Parents/Fockers, I can't name the last DeNire movie I watched. Leo, Depp, and Pacino can do no wrong in my eyes. Leo hasn't done a bad movie in like TEN YEARS. He really started to hit it off with Gangs of NY. I mean when you have FOUR Scorsese films under your belt, and being wanted by star directors like Nolan, Eastwood, and Scott, you're doing something right.
Spiderman was great, Spiderman two was awesome, Spiderman 3 was eh. They lost all of their main actors, Sam Raimi wasn't going to stay on that sinking ship. I hope this frees Raimi up to do more of the work that made him a house-hold name around the horror genre. 3 was a mess that just didn't know what it wanted to be. There are some great scenes with the Sandman, but it was just too convoluted. They're doing the same thing with X-Men, except they took it one step outside the box, and they completely ruined what they had. Again, the first two were good, and then the third dropped the ball, they tried doing something different, and now they're trying to reboot the franchise. They completely ruined my perception of Gambit, and how the hell do you mess up Deadpool?!
The guy is supposed to be in red and black spandex, and be a badass mercenary, which he definitely was NOT.
The Departed was definitely amazing. The thing is, who made that movie? Who made Goodfellas? Who made Casino, Scarface, Heat, the Godfather? Brian De Palma, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Mann (although Mann is hit or miss now). We just don't have those kind of directors anymore. Scorsese, De Palma, and Coppola to some extent, VERY good genre directors. Thing is, there just aren't very many good genre directors for these types of movies. Ridley Scott didn't do too badly with American Gangster, but he's definitely not a genre director. John Carpenter, Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, and I'd say even Tarantino, those guys are GREAT genre directors. We have some PHENOMENAL actors that could be in these films. Leo and Matt Damon are both made for crime films. Also another name to toss around, Ethan Hawke, he was very good in Training Day. Hell, even PAUL WALKER was legit in Running Scared. Robert Downey would be an interesting choice, but there are still some older actors that would be great in a crime film, SEAN PENN anyone? And as CP mentioned, Depp can do anything under the sun. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt can play grimey *%@ actors too, sign them up. I think we should see a crime super-movie like we're seeing with "The Expendables," where a bunch of them get tossed into one movie, but we need to see how that turns out before tossing around that idea.
But, I'm glad people are really appreciating Chris Nolan's work. It's been too damn long since a popular director has gotten people excited. Too much recently, people say, "man, you ready to see the new Brad Pitt film? "Man, the new Leo movie is coming out!" It makes me happy to see that people are now saying.. "Man, I can't wait to see the new Christopher Nolan movie!" Same kind of buzz is only generated for Scorsese and Cameron it seems like these days.
I never got into Six Feet Under, even though I love every damn actor on that show.
Oz is probably my all-time favorite show though, the list of actors on that show,
.
True Blood? Someone mentioned True Blood? Aww hell naw, this is about to be my damn thesis.
. Emo vampires? Nah, it ain't even about that. The entire first-season is a murder mystery, the show is VERY raunchy, I'd say it's on level with Oz as far as the raunchiness goes. Yes, there is love drama intermixed, but it's not nearly as distracting as you might think it is. This wasn't made to capitalize on Twilight, this was made because Charlene Harris (sp?) had a set of books that HBO knew would be successful if turned into a running TV show. The women on the show are
as well. Jessica is one of the most gorgeous young actresses that I've seen in a while. At first she's just okay, but as her character develops, she really becomes damn sexy. Plus, 90% of the women that Jason Stackhouse sleeps with are
, but the new chick he's been messing around with is kinda ugly, but it's not like there aren't more pretty women on the show. The entire second season is a supernatural storyline. If you can make it through the first season, the show REALLY takes off from there. There's just enough to keep you coming back in the first season, and then it picks up from there. Vampires, shapeshifters, werewolves, it's all awesome. You really get the opportunity to get to know the characters, but it's not like the show is predictable. Also, the series' best actors aren't really involved in love triangles... Lafayette is undoubtedly everyone's favorite character, and he's a gay drug dealer,
. He's really what made me keep watching the show for the entire first season. There's just
good drama all throughout the series. There's always dead bodies showing up somewhere, and someone has to pay the price. The gore is also some of the edgiest stuff you'll see on television. For example, one of the characters last episode got his head destroyed by this woman Tara with a mace (not the spray
), literally 4-5 shots to the head, his head turned out to be jello when she was done with him. It's really an amazing show if you give it a chance, it's similar to Dexter with the added context of supernatural/fiction. There's really something for everyone in the show. If you don't like the supernatural stuff, there's the love triangles. If you don't like that, there's the drama. If you don't like the drama, there's the brutality. If you don't like that, there's the humor. If you don't like the humor, there's the sexyass women on the show.
Another show that has a lot of buzz around it is an upcoming premier of "The Walking Dead," a series based on a popular horror comic about zombies. Frank Darabont is at the helm of the project, and a lot of people are looking forward to it. Early October release.
Horror is a lot more my genre, other than big-name actors, I don't go too much into action and adventure movies.
Oh and uhh, go Mavs? Just to keep things on-topic, you know..
