It's a message board fam. We're here for discussion and no one is above criticism.
That's life.
Doesn't mean people ain't making their own moves.
Plenty of people in my field are making moves and some of them don't always agree with what I do or how I do it. And they're entitled to their opinions.
And I don't view it as "hating". Which is just an awfully inappropriately overused slang term.
Doesn't bother me any. Nor should anything we're saying about Kanye bother you. Especially if some of the points are "valid".
Hey we're all entitled to an opinion right, it didn't bother me, the man doesn't pay my bills, i just thought he was being unfairly undermined for what he has accomplished in his field is all. |I but a lot of things get lost in translation via text conversations, if that's the case I apologise.
He and Jay are the only "rock star" rappers alive right now, Kanye's got a whole generation dressing like thugged out Jedi knights, and his music has moved the cultural needle at least three times and he's only been out for a little more than a decade.I'm not criticizing kanye but more so criticizing his fanbase for being so one track minded when it comes to kanye. All I simply asked was "what makes kanye the most influential?" and have yet to receive an answer....
I think you have some valid points, but to come in to the kanye thread and be downplaying his accomplishments and influence is just hating really, typing up paragraphs. Go make some moves of your own, rather then critiquing what others do or what they have done.
"To whoever think their words affect me is too stupid and if you can do it better than me then you do it." -KW.
if Ye isn't the most influential out right now, whoh is?
I said a page or two ago that it was a kind of hyperbole that I myself don't particularly tend to believe in and I was just quoting the speaker to start discussion. I typed whole generation because I was quoting someone. I thought you got that.I'm not speaking for him. I don't even know what dude is talking about really.
I'm responding to you. Because it's a "discussion board".....right? I'm still wondering why you feel there has to be one "most influential".
I didn't make a comment. I asked 2 questions. 1) What does "rock star rapper" even mean and THEN 2) why is it significant?
You make it seem like it's a positive. I'm trying to understand how you define it and why it's significant to you. You a man too...right? So I'd love a response.
Not sure how you missed that. And trust, it's likely not going to be significant to me.
Because as with much of what happens in here, a lot of what you typed, between "whole generation" and "rock star rapper" seemed over the top and exagerrated.
I think Drake is prob the biggest rapper out right now and most important musically. No shots but how you gon tell dudes to control their thirst when you in every Kanye thread on damn near every page. All Y'all like discussing this dude.
Right now I would probably say Drake. I'm not the biggest fan of his new work but when he jumps on a track whether it's good or bad it becomes a hit. This generation is eating up anything he does. Over the last 7 or 8 years it has to be Kanye though, then probably Wayne.if Ye isn't the most influential out right now, whoh is?
I think Drake is prob the biggest diva out right now and most important musically.
But the discussion was on cultural influence. Drake isn't really influencing anything in hip-hop or the larger North American culture other than getting dudes to harmonize on slowed down RnB samples. Cats still aren't rocking leopard print sweaters.

I don't know if you were including me in that "fanbase" comment because I tried to make it clear I was just throwing out that "most influential" quote to revive the thread and get people talking, but for the sake of conversation, if Ye isn't the most influential out right now, who is?
I agree. But that's also why I put it out there for discussion. I can only speak for myself. I can't, sincerely, from someone else's perspective that I haven't experienced. I had a dude tell me a few weeks ago that Boosie was "the realest out," (read: most influential to his sub-set.)Much better. And no, I didn't know you were still phantom quoting a lawyer from several pages ago
But again, a lot of you should stop taking Kanye's influence on YOU, and maybe your social circle, and stop projecting it on a "whole generation" or a "culture" (that vast, vague, almost indefinable term that people love to throw around so freely).
Drake could mean as much to a kid in Toronto or a kid going through a break up as Kanye means to YOU.
You're quick to dismiss what Wayne means to people, or Drake means to people. People who are part of the "culture". But Wayne had kids dressing ridiculous at one point. As did Kanye.
Who can gauge who is more "influential" in the grand scheme of things?
Drake was all over Sportscenter this AM. Was in the news last week for the Diddy ****. These minor news hits (Seth Rogen, Sony leak), in this day and age where EVERYTHING is news, are not "significant", at least to me, in the grand scheme of things.
And let me say one thing. Let's say Kanye might be the most "influential" to a certain age group. Likely younger.
I don't know anyone over 30 really checking for Kanye for anything other than music. But we are watching Jay's moves in AWE.
Are we not part of the "culture"? Even with that said, you don't catch me saying he's the "most influential" to the "culture". Because I feel that's a simpleton's train of thought. Because we watch Diddy's moves. And what Swizz does. Or Dame does as well.
We have officially been reduced to circles here. Hope we get some new music soon. I think I liked "Lunch Money" more than most.
Quite simple really.
I'm a fan of the majority of the man's music.
I didn't like Yeezus. Nor 808's really but that's not because I don't like his "experimentations", because I actually like "Paranoid" and a few others that don't come to mind right now.
Because it's a good song to me where many of them just are not. To me. But if you look at his full catalog, the dude is a phenomenal producer and artist. So of course I'm checking when he drops new music.
But that doesn't mean I feel like this or any thread needs to be "revived" unless there's something worth discussing.
When I see the thread bumped, I assume there's something to discuss. See cats calling my name and I reply.
Quite simple. There's dudes blowing up non-Kanye threads talking about Kanye right now. I'm not one of them.
You can't see the difference there?

There's never just one. Even the "influencers" and "influenced" by someone.
I knew you was gonna throw in Pharrell.
Pharrell is great. His music, Bape was crazy but young black kids did not care about skateboarding when he was on that. Kids in the hood are skateboarding now and wearing trukfit cuz they look up to Wayne. Really don't matter to me cuz I don't care about skateboarding but that's what I've seen.
There's never just one. Even the "influencers" and "influenced" by someone.
Of course. Depending on peoples age they're gonna say different names. Some people will say Kanye or Wayne. Then somebody older will say Jay or Diddy. Then somebody else will say Russell.
Stevie, Kareem Campbell, Terry Kennedy... All were doing it before Pharrell, but truthfully all probably got rich (richer?) thanks to Pharrell mainstreaming skateboarding in Black minds. Can't disagree. Wayne seemed to really make it "pop". I'm just saying there were other people that were a part of it.I knew you was gonna throw in Pharrell.

Maybe Pharrell sets the table for Stevie to get his Reebok deal and the DGK line. Which sets the table for Wayne etc.

The same **** gets discussed in here over and over. "What's Kanye's impact?" You should already know what to expect when the thread gets bumped.
So Wayne is responsible for the popularity of tattoos, dreads, and sippin lean?Kanye is most influential to the "fashionistas"
But when it comes to rap music & the culture today, wayne is the reason for about 70% of it
Dreads, tattoos, gang affiliation, sippin lean, dropping mixtapes, "freestyles", unorthodox metaphor rap
Obviously wayne wasnt the first to do all of that but hes the main reason why all of that is popular in the culture today
