As a huge kanye fan and hip hop enthusiast....I would say she has no idea who Tupac was

I can safely say from experience that 30-50 year old American Tupac fans think he was a lot more important than he really was on the East Coast/internationally.

I should add to that statement, the majority of Tupac's "importance" was determined after his death, not unlike Aaliyah's alleged importance. Yeezus still walking.

If there's one thing you might see from me consistently, it's that I'm just not one for hyperbole.

There is no legitimate gauge to support such a claim. So there is no "right". It's just an opinion.

Even things like "culture" and "importance" mean different things to different people.

So it's not even that I disagree with her opinion. She's entitled to it. I just disagree with that train of thought.

Crowning a "most ____, ____, EVER" in any category.....to me is a simpleton's way of thinking because there is rarely a metric of any kind to support such a thing.

Can we even call him a rapper? If you look at rap....Rakim completely changed how dudes rap in '87 (along with Kool Moe Dee to a lesser extent).

Beastie Boys and Rick Rubin and guys like Prince Paul and Dre changed how songs were produced.

Did artists like NWA, Wu-Tang, 50 not revolutionize music as we know it as well ("gangster rap" and the mixtape phenomenon)?

Artists like De La Soul, Outkast etc. brought an eclectic element to the music that likely influenced Kanye. Who were also incredibly popular.

If "culture" extends beyond music, is Jay not up there as well? A dude from Marcy who OWNS real **** and kicks it with the President?

It's these kinds of extremes that are always ridiculous to me. For me it's enough to say he's an incredibly talented artist.

Which I know.....makes me a "hater"

That's not what I think of when it comes to "cultural importance" though.

Again, I'm not sure that has a concrete definition anyway as it likely means different things to different people.

Me personally, when I think of accomplishments inside and outside of music, philanthropy and the way he carries himself for the most part (the whole Dame/Biggs thing was funny IMO but that's all I can think of), I take Jay every time.

I also failed to mention Pharrell in my initial response. Who is also very much accomplished inside and outside of music.

Who was experimental musically with NERD, has an insane catalog when it comes to production/songwriting (I can't stand "Happy", but it's the top selling song of 2014), was a trendsetter with sneakers (Dunks)/Bape/fashion, did his partnerships/designing for LV, has had a good run with BBC etc.

That's why I'm saying there's no MOST EVER. There's many. Operating at different periods in history.

For the record I don't do hyperbole either. I also pay attention to things most people/Complex don't report.

i.e. J!gga man being an influential endorser in the prison reform bill in Cali.

And Pharrell, Ye, Kendrick, and others' work with youth.

Influence is in the eye of the beholder. There's dudes being influenced by Young Thug and Migos right now while people my age still dressing and trying to talk black "intellect" like it's 2005 and they're listening to Common.

That said Yeezus >>>>> ______ in 2013.

Jay been that dude for the better part of a decade. He and Kanye have both had their hits and misses musically.

But Jay been on another level outside of music since he became president of Def Jam in 2004 and hasn't slowed down since.

I'm a 20 something NY hip-hop head and I share a birthday with the man. Trust me, no one can jock Jay more than I have in my life

I know his influence on all things hip-hop. **** I mean, Kanye's whole ego and iconoclast thing prob partially comes from his being mentored by Jay.

And I never thought Yeezus was the best album ever. Just the best album out last year. Y'all didn't want to entertain it though.

 

There's no question that there's only one rapper out there dapping up world leaders though. Well two if you count Big Willy.
