A new effort to diversify schools in the Upper West Side of Manhattan — one of the richest neighborhoods in the city — has drawn an angry reaction from many parents.

Local news station Spectrum News NY 1 has posted a video that shows white parents furiously attacking a plan to require all local middle schools to reserve 25 percent of their seats for students who score below grade level on state English and Math exams.

The plan is an effort to make schools on the Upper West Side more diverse to reflect the demographics of New York as a whole, as the schools in the area now are predominantly white.

“You’re talking about an 11-year-old, you worked your butt off, and you didn’t get that, what you needed or wanted,” one angry woman said during the meeting. “You’re telling them that you’re not going to go to a school that’s going to educate them the same way you’ve been educated. Life sucks!”

Kristen Burger, an elected member of the Upper West Side Parent Council, tells NY 1 that the plan is intended to address diversity problems in the area’s middle schools, which she describes as “very segregated.”

And NY-1’s video shows middle school principal Henry Zymeck telling many of the parents that he feels hurt by some of their comments.

“There are kids that are tremendously disadvantaged,” he said. “And to compare these students and say, ‘My already advantaged kid needs more advantage, they need to be kept away from those kids,’ is tremendously offensive to me.”

The Somali immigrant intends to argue he fired in self-defense and used reasonable force at his trial later this year, where he faces 25 years jail. At his brief appearance court appearance on Tuesday prosecutors said they were not willing to offer a plea bargain and would press on with murder charges.

Several Rural Counties In Illinois Make Themselves ‘Sanctuary Counties’ with Plans to Ignore Any New Gun Bills They Don’t Like

CHICAGO (AP) — Several rural Illinois counties have taken a stand for gun rights by co-opting a word that conservatives associate with a liberal policy to skirt the law: sanctuary.

At least five counties recently passed resolutions declaring themselves sanctuary counties for gun owners — a reference to so-called sanctuary cities such as Chicago that doesn’t cooperate with aspects of federal immigration enforcement.

The resolutions are meant to put the Democratic-controlled Legislature on notice that if it passes a host of gun bills, including new age restrictions for certain weapons, a bump stock ban and size limit for gun magazines, the counties might bar their employees from enforcing the new laws.

Judge Drastically Cuts Bail for Woman Accused of Killing Her Husband, Family Blames Her ‘Anglo’ Privilege

The family of a man fatally shot by his wife at their home in McKinney, Texas last month claims the so-called “affluenza effect” is what swayed a judge to substantially reduce the wife’s bail.

On Friday, a Collin County judge lowered the bond for Morgan Leigh Sims, 33, from $1.5 million to $140,000, the Dallas Morning News reported. Sims, who’s white, is charged with murdering her husband Daray Vontrell Sims, 37, after he was found shot to death at their home on April 20. Morgan Sims told police her husband was abusive and insisted she was only acting in self-defense.
