Jurgen Klinsmann pens new U.S. deal
December 12, 2013
By ESPN staff
United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann signed a four-year contract extension Thursday, remaining with the U.S. team for the 2018 World Cup while also becoming the team’s technical director.
“I am very fortunate to continue the work we started more than two and half years ago,” Klinsmann told U.S. Soccer’s official website. “It’s exciting to see the progress we have made, and we continue to make improvements on all fronts."
"The role of technical director is a huge challenge and also a huge opportunity as we look to keep connecting the dots to the youth national teams, coaching education, the development academy and the grassroots efforts in this country. These are fascinating topics and I am excited work with so many talented people and hear fresh ideas. For sure it means more work, but also many more fulfilling opportunities.”
Klinsmann was hired as U.S. coach in July of 2011, replacing Bob Bradley. He played for Germany's 1990 World Cup championship team and coached his native country to third place at home in the 2006 tournament, commuting to Europe from his California house in Orange County.
The U.S. drew a daunting task for next year's World Cup: difficult opponents, tropical venues and a wearying 9,000-mile zigzag journey across Brazil.
The U.S. opens its seventh straight World Cup appearance against Ghana on June 16 at Natal. Ghana eliminated the Americans in 2006 and 2010.
Klinsmann's squad meets Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal six days later in the Amazon rain forest city Manaus. The Americans have just three off days to recover before closing Group G on June 26 in Recife against three-time champion Germany.
