A Lib? Worse. He's a bernie bro.

My mother has 3 different accents

1. West Indian for west indians
2. South bronx for non west indian POC
3. 'Proper' english for white people and professional work

It's amazing to see her switch between all 3 with ease
I'm not even sure she consciously does it
Yeah famb, West Indian ladies always be keeping a couple accents on deck

I gave up on that steez soon after I came to the states because I felt I sounded ridiculous. Now it is no where near as thick but my accent still will sound somewhat different from when I am in the states as compared to at home. Speaking in broken Creole and English in Lucia just makes it naturally shift.

Every-time I go back home, whenever I meet my boys for the first, they be waiting to clown me. I don't eem like talking to them on the same day I land because as soon as the hear an American pronunciation, Imma get light up with jokes. Telling me I sound like the one slave massa taught how to read. Low key my soul be burning

Goddamn thats cold  I got a cousin that tried to americanize her accent and she just sounds off.
She sounds funny for an Antiguan and funny for an American. Dont know why she tries to keep it up.

I had an accent as a kid because I spent so much time outside of America and I got rid of most of it.
Being made fun of in Kindergarten for how I sounded got old real quick.
You'll never hear it now unless I let it creep in and it's extremely light so you'll probly still not hear it.

If you live in an immigrant community and speak your native tongue at home it’s impossible to fully get rid of your accent. I’ve been in this country for what now 24 years and still have an accent when I pronounce certain words because I pronounce the word phonetically or sound the letters as if I was reading in Polish.

Then again I don’t really sound like a native New Yorker either because the way teachers engrained in us that if you speak like a New Yorker there is that stigma as if you’re uneducated, that is... until you piss me off

Yeah there are certain words that I just cant change too. Like "roof" for some reason
My sister who never had an accent still makes fun of me sometimes
By the time I hit HS it was pretty well gone though. Only one person has called me out in the past few years.
It was a real surprise to me too. Just out of nowhere:

"What island are you from?"
"......the island of New York?"
"No there's an accent there."
"Oh. Wow. Antigua but I'm not really FROM there."

When we played Destiny together I never would have guessed you were Polish either without you mentioning it.
I'm betting other Polish people would probably pick up on it real quick though. Hard to fool the trained ear.

Not necessarily. It’s more so my coworkers and classmates throughout my life who just hear that I pronounce something a little differently than normal and automatically ask whether I was born in the states. It’s honestly so subtle that unless you really have good ears it’s hard to pick up.

I mean I’ve been living here since I was 7 so if I still had a full on accent it would be pretty sad actually considering all my years of schooling :rollin

I know a bunch of island folks and none of them sound anything close to African  . I know these Trini cousins and when they get to talking to each other I have no idea wtf they're saying. I've gotten good with Patois off the strength of the Jamaican homie. I know Belize aint on island but my homegirl's fam is from there and that's another one I have troublr with when they get to talking amongst each other. I catch every other word :lol

My closest friend is Nigerian and that's a whole diff monster.

Afrobeats, dancehall, and soca parties doe... :pimp:

It's hilarious to me how rich white people react when they are subjected to the same indignities that the criminal justice system inflicts on black and brown people every day.

"I have take time off to testify at a grand jury!??!"
"The prosecutor is being soooo unreasonable!?"
"it's not fair that I have to spend all this money on legal fees!!"

Boo ******* hoo.

Can someone please give me the breakdown of the DACA situation? The deadline was yesterday but nothing was done, so what does it mean?

Entering "only the best people" exhibit ... into the record
Nothing to do with Mueller for the record, the report is from the US Office of Special Counsel. Trump has appointed the current leader of the OSC. The penalties for the Hatch Act are largely insignificant and can range from a small fine to the indvidual being removed from his position in his employment. If I understand correctly, the WH doesn't necessarily have to discipline Conway.
