***Official Political Discussion Thread***

It's all the ads. Scroll ads, pop-ups that cover the reply box when you try to post, all of it. Makes posting replies difficult. 😒
That makes sense. It always blanks out on me like mid scroll or right after I hit post.
Yesterday I noticed the screen like squaring up on the sides and doing some weird refresh..It was hitting hard this weekend.

Did Delk show his presidential candidate how to do it?

The more he lies and says these absolutely ridiculous things during these last 2 weeks where we know the world is watching...if we're still dumb enough that he somehow becomes president, we will become a complete joke. I mean you already have the joke of the uneducated, goofball American, but there's still a sense of respect for the American experiment, and having a bunch of differing cultures come together and give people rights and try to make things equal, etc.

But if this idiot gets elected, we're a complete joke. I absolutely cannot wait for him to go the hell away. He's already hinted he's fleeing to south america. He'll probably fly there or at least have the jet on standby after the election if it starts looking clear he's going to lose. He'll couch it as he doesn't want to be in the country but we all know he'll just be running from the law. As much as I want him to have to either serve time or spend the rest of his days in and out of courtrooms, if he fled and disappeared never to be heard from again I'll take that too.

I'm old enough to remember when a certain vice president misspelling potato was cause for mockery and laughter. Look at how far we've come. There was a time when, even if you didn't agree with them politically, Republicans wouldn't have tolerated one percent of what Trump has said and done. He really has made a mockery of everything, and about 40 percent of the American people have eaten it up.

I'd like to believe we're going to do the right thing in a few weeks, but I'm really not sure. Even if Harris wins, we'll need a blowout to send a loud and clear message to this buffoon and his followers. We're just going be facing Trump 2 in 2028 in that don't happen, only smarter and less stupid next time.

Trump and his name calling is out of control.
“Dumb as a Rock”?

Buddy come on, this ain’t Highschool

Point I wanted to make is why is he so intent on standing on that hill? ….them releasing the Transcript? It’s already been released and they showed where it was edited…admitted it. He wants a public press conference or what? Why is he tweeting this on 10/20/24?

Yep, that effectively ended Dan Quayle's political career. The shift has been absolutely wild to witness. Saw Lindsey Graham have a meltdown because of Milley's statements about DJT being "fascist to the core," and other repubs supporting Harris. Like dude, what are you doing? At one point, you were as anti as anti could be, and since then, you've done nothing but suck up to him. How did we get here?

Our working theory is that it's caused by insufficient memory. Ads can impact this, as they aren't without memory cost, but even if you go ad-free that doesn't guarantee you'll never have a forced page reload.

I don't encounter forced refreshes on recent devices, but when testing the site on an older phone I could reproduce the forced reload behavior even without ads on pages with lots of embedded content, like this one:

Embedded social media posts have a relatively high memory footprint, and some threads - like this one - tend to have a lot of them. I wish the platform we used had a user setting so that social media content could render as static links for those with low memory devices, like in the old days, rather than embedded content, but turning the clock back to 2012 for the entire site would obviously be considered a net negative by most of our members.

We do have a performance update planned for the relatively near future that could help a bit, but ultimately I think the volume of embedded content in many threads is just too much for older devices with 1-2 GB of RAM.

These the guys Obama needs to treat with kid gloves so we can count on their votes
Are we really still entertaining the theory that the majority of male Trump voters are too ignorant to realize that Harris’ healthcare and economic policies would benefit them unless Tim Walz hangs a set of Truck Nutz on them - but not ignorant enough to be influenced by sexism and/or racism?

The next 16 days will be headlines like “Harris losing ground to Trump, very tight race.” And the you read the story and it’s:
“Trump has a 104% chance of winning according to Doge Bets Marketplace Strategies.”

The same terminally online people who screamed “Twitter isn’t a real place” pre-Musk now swear that Polymarket is a real place and needs to be taken seriously.

If she loses, they were right, wisdom of the crowd[funding], she didn’t prevent hard enough, and it’s all progressives’ fault.

If she wins, they never said she was going to lose and it’s not their fault you don’t understand how probability works.

Talk about a hedge bet.

Should generative “AI” (and it’s difficult to apply that branding to LLMs without further diluting the word “intelligence”) prove more enduring than other tech industry shiny objects, like “Web 3,” shill content generation could easily become for “AI search” what SEO practices have become for current algorithmic web search engines.

A fundamental problem with “AI search” is that it requires the production of good faith content to avoid encouraging users to eat rocks, while circumventing the ability of good-faith content creators to sustainably produce that content.

As it works now: you ask an “AI” agent a question and it’ll summarize content from various sites around the web to give you an answer. That only works until it successfully drives those sites out of business.

At that point, if you’re producing content for the web then your motivation for doing so is primarily to influence generative summarization output, since getting a “top result” in an AI search isn’t necessarily going to drive traffic/revenue to your site.

Instead of getting better over time, as one expects of a tech product, it could very easily wind up growing worse and worse as it becomes more inbred - generative AI parroting generative AI parroting generative AI.

The Internet is fast becoming a hall of mirrors - and not just because it's irresistible to superficial narcissists.
