‘Fun’ fact:
30 years before abortion became legal in Belgium, our government and justice department covertly added an exception.
Pregnant white women returning from our colonization of Congo were secretly allowed to get abortions because a partially black child was seen as worse than allowing an abortion.
This wasn’t known to the public until newly discovered documents that were reported this week. Hardly surprising though given our history.
Admittedly I don’t know much about other African history but I reckon our atrocities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are at the top of the list in terms of how messed up the colonizers throughout Africa were.Belgian history (and not that long ago) is a crazy read if you go there. I think you have a lot of statues and place names that are problematic at best.
not sure if it was a Belgian monarch but my wife talked about a certain monarch that murdered a lot of people in Africa. she was saying he was or was even worse than Hitler and for some reason, people didn't seem to talk nor know about it much. I know the Jewish genocide was horrible, although what happened in Africa should be treated equally as well. but maybe because the U.S. and some of the countries involved didn't care that much. I do believe that in terms of victims, some supporting countries have their preferences. even the Japanese got some leeway inspite of the atrocities they committed in WW2. but I guess that's payment for the U.S. atomic bomb experimentation on them.Admittedly I don’t know much about other African history but I reckon our atrocities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are at the top of the list in terms of how messed up the colonizers throughout Africa were.
Even now our relationship with Congo still feels weird, there’s always footage of Congolese people cheering on our king and queen when they visit the DRC like they’re deities. I guess our current royalty does at least explicitly acknowledge, condemn and apologize for all the atrocities but that’s just the bare minimum.

It is part curiosity (I wanna see who is this important foreigner who has come to visit us), part political theatre (the government has decreed that no classes shall take place just so the kids could stand along the route of the convoy and cheer under the watchful eye of their teachers). They tend to do this during most official visits.there’s always footage of Congolese people cheering on our king and queen when they visit the DRC like they’re deities.
that's it. it was Leopold.I read a lot of history and Leopold is right up there with the worst people to ever exist. Easily top 5.
