Not unless you were alive in 1976, I guess. When they said "free kick" I just figured it was what Flutie did back in the day, but they lined up like a damn kickoff...I don't even know what purpose or why that rule exists, but we are all witnesses. :lol:
 
I guess it's when the punting team commits a penalty with 0's on the clock, the offensive team has the option for a free kick.

You can do it at any point in the game, but it never happens because fair catches are rarely made within field goal range. Also, why would you take three points when your offense can get you seven? It makes sense when the clock is at 0:00 because you can't run an offensive play, but can do a kick. The punter should have kicked it out of bounds.
