Thunder reject Chandler, trade off
The New Orleans Hornets decided to trade Tyson Chandler to clear some cap space and add depth to the frontcourt. They'll have to go back to the drawing board.
The Oklahoma City Thunder did not medically clear the center onWednesday and therefore rescinded the trade. Chandler would have gone to the Thunder for forwards Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith second-round pick DeVon Hardin.
"We welcome Tyson back with open arms," Hornets general manager Jeff Bower said in a statement. "We went into this trade to garner morefrontcourt depth to add to our team as we continue our push towards the playoffs. We expect Tyson and the rest of our big guys to step up to thechallenge."
No specific reason was given as to why Chandler didn't pass the physical, but he missed the Hornets' last 12 games before the All-Star break becauseof a sprained left ankle.
"We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster," general manager Sam Presti said. "During the course of the physical examination andoutside consultations some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt that this course of action was the best for our organization."
New Orleans players had been distraught about the trade Tuesday, questioning it as a decision brought on because of the team's desire to stay below thesalary cap instead of as a way to improve the roster. Chandler is due to make about $12 million next season.
All-Star forward David West called it a businessdecision instead of a basketball decision, and said it "leaves a big question mark in the middle" for New Orleans.
Chandler had been a big part of the turnaround that landed the Hornets the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last year, when they pushed San Antonio toGame 7 in the conference semifinals. He averaged a double-double with 11.8 points and 11.8 rebounds and had more than 100 alley-oop dunks off of lobs fromAll-Star point guard Chris Paul.
His numbers were down a little, to 8.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game this season as he missed 18 games due to injury.
"I think a lot of that is because of the injuries that he's suffered this season," Hornets coach Byron Scott said after the trade. "The first couple gamesof the season, he was playing really well. Then he hurt his ankle. He came back, he was playing pretty good again, and then his neck was hurt.
"So he's had a series of injuries this season that have really stunted his progress, unfortunately. I don't think it's so much thathe's changed as a basketball player. I think it's that he's had some unfortunate circumstances."
Wizards Won't Trade Jamison,Butler?
Feb 18, 2009 9:00 AM EST
Washington could stand pat, despite the interest in the former All-Star forwards.
The Cavaliers have reportedly offered Wally Szczerbiak and his $13.8 million expiring contract in separate offers, while the Blazers have interest inButler.
"You can't always be in charge of names that come up, but let me ask you something: If you were one of the other 29 teams in the league, who wouldyou ask for?" interim coach Ed Tapscott said. "You'd ask for Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. So we can't be in charge of who people ask for.All we can do is say yes or no. My belief is that people are inquiring and as far as I know, the answer is no. We believe in the core of this team, we know whywe are where we are. We just don't have healthy bodies."

Feb 18, 2009 8:52 AM EST
"We have not had any discussions with regard to trading Chris Bosh," Colangelo said.
The latest rumors had Bosh going to the Bulls in a three-way trade that would have sent Amare Stoudemire to the Raptors.
"If I can be very clear here, there is no truth to that," Colangelo said.
