Imo there are two parts of this story.
1) UEFA clearly pulled a bait and switch on RM to try humiliating them.
2) The cult of Messi-sexuals has too much sway in BdO voting. These are your japes of the footy world and being journos and pundits doesn’t make you immune to it. They’re the simultaneously Messi/Barca/Pep/Argentina/Tier 2 City fans of the world who are also anti-RM. These are the people that rallied around Rodri and Lautaro but had nothing to say about Carvajal. They also didn’t care for Rodri when he had a better season last year and Messi was in the running.

He led the league and CL winners in goals and assists and scored most of their big knockout goals once again. They don't come close to winning either without him.
Can't exactly say that for Rodri and City/Spain but he won, it is what it is

He was their best player in a season they racked up hardware. In the CL especially he stepped up each time they needed him, as good as Jude was he wasn't the deciding factor in those moments.
In the past, there were years where Messi scored more but Ronaldo won it and vice versa. The one who won was usually the one who balled out the most in the CL that year despite the stat tally.
