Or have Vegeta use Trunks' time machine to go back and kill Frieza before he blows up their planet. That would be an awesome arc. Or make Broly canon. Anything other than this trash.

Yeah but that whole story may be an example of Toriyama not giving any dambs anymore.
Case in point:
Instead of Goku being sent to Earth to wash all the earthlings, Bardock is suspicious of Freeza's order to have all the Saiyans report on Planet Vegeta and sends Goku to Earth because he thinks something bad is going to happen.
At the time Raditz (a kid) is off-world with Vegeta (a kid)
We all understand that in the original manga it is explicitly stated that Goku was sent to Earth UNDER ORDERS to kill the Earthlings, and it is also implied that baby Goku was well aware of these orders AND should have recognized Raditz by name and appearance when he came to Earth later (if he didn't lose his memory, of course)
So Toriyama either made a MASSIVE retcon regarding Goku being sent to Earth or he's trying to say that Raditz was massively misinformed. There's two conflicting scenarios in the story now:
1. Goku being sent to Earth on standard mission procedure to kill all humans and sell the planet. He is well aware of these orders.
2. Goku being sent by his parents because Bardock is worried about Freeza. Bardock and Gine hope to join him on Earth later. This also makes no sense because as a Saiyan, Goku would have achieved King Piccolo status before long, unless Bardock and Gine were planning on ruling Earth

If an obvious plot hole or retcon is apparent you can guarantee its Toriyama giving no damns.
Half the fans know the series better than he does. Feel like at this point he just does whatever cause he knows people will eat it up.

Again, yall have to read the fan manga where Vegeta was raised on Earth instead of Goku. **** is lit and the art I would say is better than Toriyama himself.
Cliffs:
Vegeta is a good guy on Earth and being an elite, enemies that Goku struggled against (RR army, Piccolo, Jackie Chun etc) he washes with no trouble at all. This means he had no opportunity to grow and is actually weaker as a result.
Kakarot is the typical low class Saiyan but spending his life in space fighting super strong enemies that Vegeta would have washed made him the undisputed strongest Saiyan due to the constant life-threatening battles.
