Tom Fornelli did a really good job of breaking down the non football side of the B1G’s mindset behind expansion.

Cliffnotes:
1. It’s not just about football. It’s as much about academics, but not just in the way people think.

2. No region has suffered from population migration as much as the Midwest over the past century.

No single state produces as many potential students who leave the state to go to school elsewhere as California does.

3. They view grabbing the LA schools and that media market as a chance to reach potential new “customers”.

Customers because they make MUCH more money on student loans and tuition and endowments than they do football and always will, so adding USC and UCLA, two Cali teams from a major media market will have teams like Iowa in front of kids from California every weekend and normalize the idea of attending those schools.

4. UCLA’s appeal is that it has one of the largest alumni bases in the country and alums spend money.

I think Miami/Clemson to the SEC will happen soon-ish

Agreed. Once they get that whole contract situation settled with the ACC all bets will be off. I really hope the B1G could get any of Clemson/Miami/FSU for competitive reasons. What I’ve read though is Clemson doesn’t have a huge market and the B1G would want UNC, Va Tech, or Georgia Tech (gross). Obviously geographically none of them make sense from the ACC besides Pitt. I’d be shocked if the B1G doesn’t try to at least one school in the Florida region so they can truly span the country.

Exciting times coming up either way

I’d have to think Phil Knight and Nike have too Much influence for Oregon to get left behind like that.

I have been LOVING all the butt hurt Oregon folk over USC burning their conference to the ground. :lol :lol :lol :lol

Radio hosts dance back and forth about SC being trash for over a decade then casually mentioning they the only school with any actual pelts on the wall carrying the conference name. :rollin

And for sure the SEC needs to get that.......Eugene television market asap. All 750K household market. :lol

Job well done SC + other LA school I can't remember the name of until basketball season.

There's 170k people in Eugene. I guess 750k-800k if you add Portland which is 2 hours away...

Looking at markets, I understand wanting UNC but I’m surprised they want FSU since they already have UF for a Florida market. Really surprised they don’t want Va Tech over Virginia and Clemson won’t add much to their market either.

Strictly speaking television markets
