Even before news broke that O.J. Mayo received a 10-gamesuspension for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy, the Grizzlies made contactwith Jason Williams.

Yes, J-Will. The Griz are interested in bringing thepoint guard back to Memphis afterhe clears waivers. Orlando releasedWilliams Wednesday night. The Griz only want to makesure that there are no medical/injury issues dogging the 12th-year veteran.

So why reunite with J-Will?
 
A)   Griz owner Michael Heisley is a major fan of histalent and was not happy when Jerry West shipped him to Miamiin 2005. This would be the third time Heisley has tried to re-sign Williamssince he left.

B)   Better stability at point guard. Rookie Greivis Vasquezhas been credible at times behind Mike Conley. But J-Will would supplantVasquez as the backup because of his high basketball IQ, court vision and morereliable shooting.

      C)   J-Will's maturity. There is a belief among Grizbrass that Williams has long dropped the rebel attitude that made him a problemduring his first stint with the Griz. They actually expect some degree ofleadership.

Talks are serious and perhaps the only way the Griz don'tsign Williams is if he gets an offer to play for a playoff contender. Orlandoswooped in the last two times the Griz showed interest. But if there are notakers, look for J-Will to join the Griz. Heisley likes J-Will as much as hedoes Allen Iverson.

Williams and Orlando divorced because he was relegated toa fourth-string role after the Magic acquired Gilbert Arenas from Washingtonon Dec. 18. Williams signed a one-year deal with the Magic last August.

I think dudes time is over though.
