So here we go again with the New York Knicks, another forgettable season highlighted by more failures than triumphs mercifully winding down. Another coach is gone, another roster badly needs an overhaul, another year of Carmelo Anthony’s prime lost to mediocrity.
Phil Jackson was in Denver this week, getting a far too infrequent firsthand look at the team he is being paid $12 million per year to resurrect. Kristaps Porzingis is Jackson’s legacy, a 7-foot-3 Latvian overflowing with talent, a budding big man who will redefine the center position the same way Dirk Nowitzki once did power forwards. But if Porzingis is Jackson’s greatest triumph, his decisions regarding the young star’s coach may eventually be his most defining failures.
