There were rumors that he got in a fight with a black man and called him a N word
Then there are stories that he thought black players from the Negro League deserved to play in the Major Leagues
There are also historians that were able to prove that Cobb's biographer exaggerated and lied about many of Cobb's history.

So it's literally unknown at this point.

I think Cobb was a well known a-hole during his playing career, but he probably mellowed out when he retired.

Reading up on old timers baseball history is really interesting. Ty Cobb sounds like a progressive compared to most of the white people that played during that era.
