That's exactly what I've used it for and no I doubt it wouldn't make a difference if there was no hole. The hole is tied in to getting a grip.

Besides that who says everyone drinks can sodas with a straw? When I use a straw I don't even have a problem keeping the straw in place.

I kinda stopped using straws altogether when I don't need them cuz I feel they're a bit childish. Use them for fast food beverages and that's about it.

If you are a daily heavy soda drinker or any drinks with the same contents for that matter, then using a straw would be ideal. It would cause less acid erosion to your teeth and enamel.
