Miami resident Jocelyn Morffi married her longtime partner, Natasha Hass, at a sun-lit outdoor ceremony at the Key Largo Lighthouse Saturday, February 3. By the end of the week, Morffi had been fired from her job teaching first grade at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School.

Morffi and Hass were not available to comment Friday. (Neither was a legal advocate.) But a source close to the family told New Times that when the school discovered Morffi had married another woman, the administration "asked" the teacher to resign. She refused, so she was fired.
The source provided a letter the school sent to concerned parents Thursday in which administrators confirmed Morffi was fired after seven years, but did not say why. The school is located on SW 12th Avenue between Little Havana and Coral Gables.

"Today a difficult and necessary decision has been made regarding Ms. Jocelyn Morffi, our first-grade teacher," the letter reads. "She is no longer teaching at our school."

In 2015, the Miami Herald wrote a glowing profile about Morffi, after she started a program called #teachHope70x7 that encouraged kids to feed the homeless and "encourage hope" in the community. (The "70x7" references a bible passage about forgiveness.)

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Miami did not respond to multiple messages from New Times today. But Florida remains one of the few states where employers can still fire someone based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Despite constant complaints and protests from LGBTQ activists, state lawmakers have refused to pass laws protecting employees from getting fired for coming out. The issue is even affecting state business: National LGBTQ groups are asking Amazon.com to avoid building its new headquarters in Florida because the state does not protect LGBTQ employees.

Miami's current archbishop, Thomas Wenski, has a long history of anti-gay comments. When the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015, Wenski released a statement comparing the ruling to the 1857 Dred Scott case, which stated black people could be legally owned as property in the United States.

"This decision redefining marriage will also bring bad consequences," the archbishop wrote. "Losing the understanding of marriage in our culture as a conjugal union of a man and a woman in a permanent and exclusive commitment conducive to welcoming and raising the children born from such a union weakens the family as the basic cell of society; and it imperils the human flourishing of future generations."

The source close to Morffi said that even parents of students at the school are upset about her termination and say Morffi was well liked among students. Miami filmmaker Billy Corben attended the wedding and tweeted a photo of the two women exchanging vows. Then he slammed the school for forcing Morffi out of her job days later.

wow i just came from Miami
some of them ppl are pretty strict with religion

Florida being Florida

A lot of people criticize Cali for stuff

But I’m always like, hey at least we aren’t Florida

Ahh, religion and tolerance—seems to go hand in hand. :smh:

That said, it’s a private school so I’m sure they’re well within their rights. Doesn’t make it right though.

Private or not, seems like a clear violation of her civil rights...how she performs her job has nothing to do with her sexual orientation

Sue them for everythinnnggg

She won't win.

Sts. Peter and Paul did not respond to a request for comment. Archdiocese of Miami spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta confirmed that Morffi had been fired, but would not elaborate on the reasons except to say that the teacher had broken her contract. Agosta said it was the archdiocese’s policy not to discuss personnel matters.

“As a teacher in a Catholic school their responsibility is partly for the spiritual growth of the children,” Agosta said. “One has to understand that in any corporation, institution or organization there are policies and procedures and teachings and traditions that are adhered to. If something along the way does not continue to stay within that contract, then we have no other choice.”

After judges in Florida lifted the state’s ban on same-sex marriage in 2015, Archbishop Thomas Wenski sent a memo to employees reminding them of the Archdiocese of Miami’s policy. All employees, including school teachers, are considered church representatives and are expected to abide by Catholic teachings, the memo said. Any conduct “inconsistent” with that could result in disciplinary action, including termination.

Florida does not have a statewide law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. A Miami-Dade County ordinance that protects LGBT residents from discrimination exempts religious institutions from certain provisions.

However, she deserves MUCH better.

Pretty much. That’s not just some school rule, it’s United States Law... cannot discriminate based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or disability... ect.

It was a Catholic school and it's legal in the state to fire over sexual orientation, so she got no case. (I'm sure she agreed to terms of employment when she was hired, and that was prolly part of the terms). All they can do now is make noise to have laws introduced to protect ppl with the same situation in the future.

A lot of states can fire a person for any reason they deem. I don't even think they have to state why. It's a scary thought.

Wow and it's a female.

I can see some ultra-conservatives flipping out about a male/male couple, but female/female? Double standards usually works to their favor in that situation.

Still crazy tho. How does something like that effect your ability to teach?

Florida once again maintains it's standing as the L Champion of the United States of America.

I wonder what other things they'd fire someone for bc it's outside of Catholic belief. If a person got pregnant without being married, would they get fired as well?

^ interesting. What if you knew your son's teacher was a frequent fapper (let's say through social media post or something). Would that bother you, affect how you view him or would you be like it's whatever?
