Same reason there are people with P.h.Ds  working at borders. Yall be overthinking some of the writing.

Michael better be nominated for an emmy along with Terry. This seasons acting has been oscar worthy IMO. From MIB facial expressions to last nights vulnerable Linus.

Sun and Jin were both touched but I've yet to see where Sun has been put in a life or death situation...MAYBE they're the "adam and eve" skeletons we saw?

Great season...Kates episode was the only let down so far.
Only Jin was touched on the shoulder by Jacob.... I think.  Gotta go back and check.  Edit my theory is false via lostpedia:

Touching each one of them on the shoulder with each of his hands, hetells them in Korean that their love is special and not to take it forgranted. After he leaves, Sun and Jin are both perplexed at exactly whohe was and Jin remarks that his Korean was excellent.

The screencaps out there aren't very clear as to what was etched into the ship wall.  My first guess would be Elba

I think when Jacob touch's you, you can't kill yourself. Jack was going to, but then the car wreck happened. Locke was going to, but then Ben did. Now, Richard pretty much confirmed it. He must have touched Michael at some point, because Mike couldn't kill himself either. But, I don't know if that means the O6 won't age like him....

And I liked this episode a lot. It has a nice mix of answers and pushing the story forward. I still think LAX was the best this season, but I think it was just because I was soo hype for the season to start.
I am not sure that you had to have touched Jacob to not die. Did Jack touch Jacob? I can't remember. I remember Mikal couldn't kill himself when the fat guy came and told him to go back to the island. Don't know if it's that Jacob touched him or just that the "island" won't let them die.
Remember back when Ben visited Widmore in his home, didn't he say something that gave the impression he couldn't be killed? Wasn't that before Ben even saw Jacob?

Maybe the "island" is/was actually someone (Jacob). Just thinking out loud.
I like this thread.

I was thinking the same thing about Michael too, has he ever met Jacob? I remember on the freighter when he wanted to set off the bomb someone said not yet but I can't remember if it was Jacob or not? I think Michael is one of the six candidates or was his name crossed out in the lighthouse?

That is kind of interesting because Ben changed (in life in the states) and he almost went to Locke's side (on the island) but didn't. The Asian kid (bad with names, sorry) told him that Jacob had hoped he changed up till he died. Then once the curly haired chick said she would have Ben he followed her.

Wasn't Elba also what Ben was writing on the whiteboard in the classroom? I remember thinking at the time it was an annogram for Abel from Kane and Abel in the Bible.

1.  The island exists or existed depending on what your theory is.  Ben's father commented that they were once on the island as part of the Dharma Initiative.  How/why did they leave?
2.  Ben changed.  He gave up his power quest in order to help Alex.  So far the people who have definitively changed: Jack, Hurley, John, and Ben.  Kate may or may not have changed, not quite sure on that one yet.  Sayid has not changed.
DMX

Good points brought up regarding the sideways flash as I too am intrigued to know how or why they left.  It was nice to see that Ben's father appeared to be a nicer man and Ben was taking care of him in the flash sideways.

However I wanted to address your point of characters changing.  While it is hard to completely judge if Kate has changed I am going to say that yes she has.  The Kate we knew before the plane crash never would have stopped while on the run to help Claire at all.  And regarding Sayid....we have to remember that before Sayid killed Keamy and his crew he had changed and abstained from his torturer ways and even thought he was not "worthy" of being with the person he loved. Sayid had no intention of hurting anyone but he did what he had to do out of necessity to save the person he loved.  That actually is different from torturing because it is your job.

I could be wrong but just something to think about...

I'm thinking more and more that the "alternate flashes" could be the end. I can only think of a few people who are worse off than the island. Locke is one of them and I wouldn't be surprised if the final scene of the show was Jack fixing Locke. Probably dumb, though. My gf gets mad when I say my theories.

Oh, and sorry Keamy, but you're done in both lines.

Yes.  Ben was giving a lecture about Napoleon and his exile to the Italian island of Elba.

Yeah, that's what it seemed like to me as well.

Things are getting so interesting. Between Wed-Mon I get the worst LOST withdrawals ever!

It was very nice seeing Alex.
Ben's speech at the end was touching.
Widmore finally stepping in!

I love this show so much.... I can't wait for more, but I don't want it to end

.

Thank you NT for this thread, I tweak less because of it on non-Tuesdays.

Wasn't it said that the flash side ways would end mid season.
I also think it's interesting that Widmore is traveling in a sub, maybe something I'm looking too much into..

About the flash sideways did Ben get fired or quit? The whole letting Artsz take his parking space implied that but the way he said that he'd no longer be doing detention duty and he'd continue the history club made me think he pulled off some last scheme to bend the principal to his will.

I wasn't paying much attention to the flash sideways in the end so I'm not sure if I missed a scene in between.

Nah I think he decided to let Alex get her recommendation and he keep it quiet. He was just giving Artsz his spot since Artsz helped with the email and Ben didn't go through with the blackmail.

Episode was extremely good. Acting was superb. Ben and Jack are my dudes (nh). Jack straight up had that I don't give a #$#@ I'm the #$## attitude going on

. It's also amazing how much Ben has changed from the past seasons up until now. Going from menace to helping out Sun with whatever she was doing.

As always, cannot wait until next weeks episode.

i'd just blackmail him again once Alex gets into Yale.

Last night's episode was absolutely great. But by the end, it felt really bittersweet. The last beach scene just made me think about how the show will be ending soon...

I think the whole point is that in the sideways world, its not the same Ben we see on the Island.. he puts someone else's needs before his own. He's not his normal manipulative self.
