Every trade is some level of it doesn't change much. (Of the what's out there rumors. Something could pop up in the next 2 weeks unexpectedly).
Rui for Bruce Brown improves defense, but doesn't improve rebounding and offense gets significantly worse. And between Gabe, Bruce, DFS, Vando and backup 5 whoever it is Is really bad offensively, and if Bron & AR are not perfect, it'll go as some of the post trade games have gone.
You could say hey Rui for a more expensive Center, and think that's the problem. Which to a big extent the backup Center is a problem. But then still would be a who is the Guard / Forward swing that can get you buckets. Gabe isn't going to get that return. (Also could have just done something different in the offseason for Center..... Anything really).
I don't know how much Nets would have been interested, but they should have tried to get Gabe & Filler out for DFS. If it required more seconds, so be it.
Then you still have DLo & Rui salaries if your intention is to move them.
Things could change, but I think it was a misstep. Not to get DFS. That makes sense. But I think they should have tried to get guys further down the pecking order for that move. To allow for the next moves they were hoping to make.
Better to have DFS, and fail to move DLo & Rui. Than having DFS, and now seeing you need Guard & Center play again, and not sure what moves actually make sense.
