I think the one issue is that if you kept 4 or BI or Lonzo over Kuz. That’s pretty much the team. Would have been operating on high teens - low 20s in cap space.
I think in the end, they were placed into Kuz being untouchable in this round of trade talks because they didn’t have a choice.

Yea you at least have to leave the door open. You can't just lock yourself out and be like nah.. we're not even gonna try to get Kawhi etc. As much as I would have wanted to keep BI I can understand the rationale

If you do your back channel due diligence you don't have to. We've heard for the entire 2nd half of the year that we weren't going to be in play for any of the top free agents. If we the public heard that, you know the actual brass has heard the same things. Subsequently actually completing the AD trade didn't improve that prospect for various reasons for the top guys. But then again we have a clown car full of characters running the front office that still believe they actually have a shot at Kawhi. So while it's the rationale, you could've kept BI and moved him if you actually got a commitment from a max guy. They didn't operate like that though.

Also, griffin is no fool
He knows that zo and bi were our best assets and unfortunately they were flawed enough to warrant asking for both.

I still don't believe we're in play for the top guys now. As in KD, Kawhi, Kyrie and Klay. That's the only guys that are truly worth that 32.5 mil. Jimmy and Kemba are a lower tier.

Could say the same thing about Bron not coming but here he is. And if you do the trade that way you lose both Kuz and BI, this way you at least keep one of them. Bringing in AD has to improve your chance at free agents, I don't see how it doesn't. I think they clearly have some type of communication with Kawhi's camp to be so confident they have a shot, same way they had communication with Bron before he came. This goes all the way back to Kawhi's original trade demand

Being a 3rd option/wheel when you're a champion already and in the prime of your career when you're KD, Kawhi, Kyrie and Klay is appealing? C'mon now.
By this time last year and even before, Bron coming here was a foregone conclusion. Kawhi is anything but that. Never mind the Bron factor for guys like KD, Kawhi and Kyrie.

Klay is already a 3rd option. Everybody should know Kawhi and a healthy KD are better than 35 year old Bron and AD. Those guys aren't in consideration for 3rd option, it would be their team.
You specifically were talking about the media. Woj still had Bron taking meetings with Philly at this time. Vegas had us as underdogs up until the very last minute. It was far from a foregone conclusion. The reddits and message board insiders had Bron coming almost a year ahead of time but the mainstream was slow to catch on. That's the same situation with Kawhi. The message board guys had Kawhi coming for months now, even a year ago. Mainstream is just now conceding that we'll at least get a meeting. Stein just now reporting that the Lakers are confident when a reddit guy was saying it way back in April. Boston and Philly didn't commit to a trade because they had reason to believe he was headed to LA. The signs have been there at the least.
And the Bron thing is overblown. KD studies his every move and has worked out with him for years, AD idolizes him, Kawhi has worked out with him and reportedly wouldn't mind playing with him before the switch up in the media. Kyrie kissed his *** and apologized. Klay is in space jam 2.
We'll see what happens. Only thing I'm sure of is that he's not going to the Clippers even tho we've been hearing that all year.. like you said

I know kawhi Klay and kd and kyrie are next level superstars but nobody ever thought we were in running for Klay kd or kyrie. So really just kawhi. By getting AD and LeBron together. You increase that pool to jimmy, kemba and even d’lo Those latter 3 with LeBron and AD are worth as much as kyrie alone with ONLY LeBron. Kind of odd but it makes sense if u really think about it

We've literally been linked to all of those 4 top guys at some point since Bron signed or even before in Kawhi's case. Jimmy and Kemba were always going to be options with or without AD. I still don't necessarily want either.
I mention KD and Kawhi got the simple fact they're Bron's contemporaries and in helping him they'd be elevating his legacy which doesn't make sense when you know these guys have egos. Both have said they want to compete against him. Kyrie is a weirdo so who knows what's going on with him.
These other guys don't need Lebron or the Bron circus to elevate their own standing in the pantheon of NBA history.
